Got mine in my oil pans , that's the hottest spot having just come off the engine. Any where else will be cooler.
That way I know "the worst".

the sad thing is you need to know how hot it is coming from the motor to see if anything is breaking and after the cooler to see what is going to the bearings and that the cooler is large enough
if I just do one I put it after the cooler to be sure I'm not cooking the bearings as you know the pan oil is hot but the syntheic oil that should be in your motor can handle it

What do you get for temps???
Mine is in the pan too and I get 200 at 3000, 230-240 at 4000, 260 after a short WOT run. I would think its about 190-200 after the cooler. I run royal purple so I dont have to worry about it.
How can you put a gauge after the cooler since it goes right back into the engine? I have a Imco 3X18 cooler w/ t-stat, 10 qt Canton pan

DanB,
At 3000 rpm for a while my 540's run 175* with merc HP500 coolers. They're still relatively new (5.5 hrs) so I haven't beat on them too much yet , other than short bursts but haven't gone over 175 yet , but I'm sure they can .I'm running Silogram 20W-50 that guarantees 20* lower temp. Maybe it works
