Default Fuel Tank Check Valve?

Do boats have a fule tank check valve to prevent spillage in the event of a blow over? I was told that all boats have this and if it sticks it could cause a "out of fuel" type situation.

Has anyone heard of this? Can this check valve be removed/replaced easily? I would think it would be in the fuel tank at the fuel pickup but hard to get to on the boat.

Any ideas?

what it is, is a spring loaded stainless steel ball bearing.....it should sit right where your fuel lines connect to the tank(pickup/sender) its normally closed untill the fuel pump draws fuel then it opens.....its got a light tention spring in there so it shouldnt stick....unless it happens to be gummed up from bad fuel sitting around too long.......you should be able to find it prety easy.

They call it an anti-syphon valve. If you do a search you will see it mentioned often on threads discussing fuel starvation or running lean. There is also a little screen in there that can give the same affect.

Thanks for the info, guys!

My buddy found a boat mechanic who says he can fix (remove) it so he is going to bring his boat there and get it done.

If it is anti-siphon, what are the ramifications of removing it?

Most of our boats sit ass-low and if the belly tank is full, the fuel level when topped off will be far above the fuel hoses' low points. If your fuel line ever cracks below the fuel level, it will siphon fuel into your bilge.

Boom.

Also, the fuel charge in the hoses will bleed back to the tank (syphon too) when the engine is shut down (suction side) and will need to be refilled each time you start the engine. This can create excess cranking, particularly if you have a qjet carb.

The engine is EFI but it does sound like it should probably be replaced rather than removed.

Are they all the same or are they particular to each boat mfg and model?

If you have a 5 gallon outboard fuel tank handy try running the engine off that to see it if fixes the problem. If it does, you have a tank or pickup issue.
