Question How to remove exhaust tips?

I just had the boys at Stainless Marine custom make me a set of offset tips to correct the exhaust alignment problem I posted earlier.

http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...threadid=53491

Now my problem is removing the old tips. I have removed the hardware cut the silicone around the tips and even pounded on the tips, they will not budge. I was thinking about using an acetylene torch, but do not want to hurt or discolor the gel-coat.

Any suggestions, I know this must be a common problem.

When i say pounded tried to knock them loose and hit them out from the inside.

Stubborn little tips!

BIGGER HAMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You also might try getting a long, thin knife and try to cut the silicone or (hopefully not) 5200 from the inside between the tips and transom hole.

Use heat, I used a propane torch on the inside of the tip. I had 6 mounted on my fountain with 5200. They pretty much fell right off. I had a puller rigged up to put pressure on the while applying the heat but after the first two I just had a friend pull on them with a pair of vise grips when they got hot. Be carefull you dont breathe in the fumes - NASTY It worked much better than I thought. I took about 5 minutes of even heating just keep the torch moving. This was a tip from a fellow OSO member.

P.S. I had no problem with the Gelcoat.

Had the same problem earlier this spring. Did the same thing you did, trying to beat them out from the inside. They wouldn't budge at all.
A heat gun worked for me to soften up the sealants. I used a 2x4 that i shoved into the tips to get leverage up, down, and side to side to loosen them up. A little more heat and some more pressure with the 2x4, out they came. Good luck.

Well Heat looks like it is the answer, that should not be a problem since the boat is currently in the garage and it is a record heat week of 128 Degrees in Havasu, Argghhh.

I will try the heat this weekend and let you know the results.

Thanks Raypanic and Dork for the info.

Boy with 128 degrees I bet you could use a bic lighter to finish them off!

Had mine sent out to get stainless flappers welded
inside the tips.
First took off all mounting.
Cut out all RTV silicone inside and out.
Then got a screwdriver and pride between
the hose and tip.
As I did this I sprayed WD-40 in between
the hose and the tip.
With a rubber strap wrench from Sears you then
can start twisting the tip loose from the hose.
Good Luck!

A thin piece of piano wire worked between the flanges and the transom may help. Like a garott.
