Default 502 timing

When setting up timing (after the static is set) to set the 8 degrees base I jumped the a-b terminal and the motor dies, the tool from merc is just a jumper from a-b, whats the deal?

You must have an older 502 EFI. You need to set the idle speed to about 2000 rpm and then jump the wires. The newer EFI's don't need the rpm increased.
