Hook removal (again)

If you remove the hook from a v-bottom, can't you control the resulting porpoising (sp?) just by dropping the tabs down a bit?

You probably could but I will never remove hook from my bottom (BTW, a 29 Outlaw has major hook). OSO member "mr gadgets" said he removed the hook from a Checkmate he had and it became undrivable.

Look at sharpening the edge where the transom meets the hull side. Often this junction is rounded so that the builder can pull the hull from the mold easier. I have read that squaring off this junciton to a 90 degree angle can increase speed up to 3 mph.

Kook,
Started a thread like this in the BAJA owners forum. Seems that if you removed just a bit at a time you could see what is happening. What model of boat are you contemplating this operation on?

Tim:

Took a look at 60 day history, and no sign of a thread on hook removal.

Kook,
Looks like I will be the guinea pig on this one! Planning to start slow and remove a little at a time. It seems that some hulls really need the hook and the others were put there to compensate for the standard as shipped hull and power. For instance the Force 235 was sold with anything from a 350 standard to a 502. Not all came equipped with trim tabs. For some hulls and general planning they elected to put a hook in?

Kook,
Do a search for "hook" in the T&Q section, or use my member number 601. That should bring up a few threads about it..
When I removed the hook, I took out a little at first, maybe two feet forward of the transom. It didnt seem to give me much, then I took all of the hook out and that is when I found it to be unpredictable in certain kinds of bumpy water... I then added some wedges to the bottom to put the hook back in, but not on the keel where the factory had put it. A year later I removed the wedges and replaced them with my own home made trim tabs, so I could put the hook back in when I was on the bumpy stuff, but on the river, no hook, go like hell!! If you want to you can email me and I will expand on this.. but the search should come up with some threads..

Good Luck.. remove slowly as the labels says!!

Dick
