three washers needed for head bolts!?!
i need three washers for each bolt of the cylinder head to torque them....
heads are lower , this arp kit came from states is for same application,no misorder or no part number mix-up... i dont know the exact reason but its like that... -my heads can be early version; is the most reasonable idea i heard until now.it is possible.they can be. anyway would you install 3 washers to each bolt on cylinder heads? -mark IV block with merlin heads... thnx for help |
I'd order a different part number. Call ARP and they can help you find a set that fits better, or makw you a special set.
|
i have all (yes all) arp bolt models and some studs for short deck BB-chevy.none fits.
:) very strange... |
Are they all the bolts or just the outside ones. ARP makes a kit special for the merlin heads
|
1 Attachment(s)
they are all different kits like this;
by somehow i have ALL the kits that arp produces for BB-chevy and different head combinations... |
you see the note on the box; 'for merlin heads' ,and part number shows the same but they dont fit;
i decided to make a combination from all kits: no i tried with some bolts +some studs:no i dont know what to order,arp is asking if i am sure its bb?!?!? LOL things are out of control about this bolt situation... last chance ; i can build them here but material is problem... now on thursday they have send me another package with fedex after receiving exact measures of required bolts , i will see next week..... |
Are the threads long enought to allow you to just take a cut off saw to the bolts? MK4, so thru holes?
Also, depending on which exhaust manifolds you use, the extra washers may not allow the exhaust to mount tight. At least it is this way with the Merc/Gil systems. |
-dont have any problem with exhaust,they are very high..
to cut the bolts :then too little turns will hold the head. to make more turns on the bolt : not possible cause its getting smaller diameter after the turns. to make more turns in the block: may be but this is the last thing to do. |
"Make more turns"
I like your terms. Is that the terminalogy in your homeland? I work in a machine shop in a university with alot of foreign students. This reminds me of a student that wanted me to 'dig' some holes for him in some steel. We use the term 'drill'. It keeps things interesting. BTW, You don't want to chase more threads on an existing bolt. More than likely, they are rolled on. Best bet is to wait for the replacements. Good Luck |
oops! i forgot the word 'drill'
;) |
More information. Also you may want to use a stud kit as an option.

i already checked those www's. ordering the parts with thier part number but however they dont fit. thnx for help |
+i also did everything which is mentioned on the tec-tips
-cleaned the block 4-5 times (bolt holes) -used some motor oil for easier turn etc-etc |
i agree with you formula, now as i mentioned will receive another package next week but this time they have all necessary lengths for each bolt (3 diferent size required)
we'll see.... by the way what do you call the turns on the bolt? |
My suggestion of cutting the bolt shorter was solely dependent upon the length of available threads. But from his reply, I take it they start below the head/block surface, at which point I agree it is best to wait for the next order try. IF the threads would have extended into the head, cutting the bolts to correct length would have been ok. I was under the impression that the MK4 454's had thru holes?
The turns are called threads. Want all the info on bolts? such as pitch, tpi, major and minor dia's, pitch dia's, grade, classes, and tons more terms that describe the threads. And I bet you thought a bolt was just a fine or coarse thread. ;) :D Post the results for next weeks purchase try. |
Want all the info on bolts?
-yes pls Post the results for next weeks purchase try -ok :) |
A possibility ,Maybe the heads have been cut this much?????
Is all the thread on the stud going into the block?? |
Sorry you are having so much trouble.On my newer merlins they have the 4 head bolts that are above the exhaust port raised so I needed a 5" long bolt when the washer was installed,is it the same on your heads.I ordered the bolts from World and the washers were a manley product.On mine the stock head bolt measures 4" long and that is with the built in shoulder.The ARP bolts that I have measures 4" with there washer installed.Do you know what size bolt you need I have plenty of ARP sitting around.:cool:
|
Timucin,
Do you have and stock head bolts laying around to see how they fit? I have a brand new take off set of headbolts for a mark 6 if anyone wants them. I got a brand new GM motor over the summer and it cam with stock heads. I removed the heads, put on the Merlins, put in my cam and was ready to rock and roll. If anyone wants the bolts email [email protected]. I will sell for $25 plus shipping. Panther. |
thnx for all help;
i dont remember the spesific measures of the bolts.papers are not with me. Is all the thread on the stud going into the block?? i tink so but dont remember now, will post all tomorrow :) |
yep!!!!!
