Bad Habit's advice is sound- 10:1 is right on the edge. The shape of the combustion chambers in both the Vortec and Sportsman heads allows a little more leniency with the compression game, but not much.
Sounds like you are on your way to building a real fun SBC!

I got a screaming deal on a 383 kit, but I was stuck with the pistons in it. I'm trying to get ahold of the machine shop to see what can be done about it. The builder was very comfortable with going 10.0:1, but I was a bit skeptical. I guess for good reason now. So yes, it's going to be a heck of a SBC, but I dont think my drive will appreciate it very much.
