With a big roller cam (I'm using the Crane 651 cam) you should change the lifters and valve springs regularly, 150 hrs or so. If they break, they make a mess of your engine. The cam specs on the 420 cam are .530/.551 lift, 228/236 duration @ .050. The roller cam has much more lift and while duration is similer, the roller has steeper opening and closing rates. The next larger cam in Cranes inventory, the 741, is what people are using in 502's and 540's. While it will lope more, and propably revert water, it will not perform well. What do you have in that Mustang? It sounds like a mean machine.

I don't want to sound like a suck-up to Crane. I've used Ultradyne and Cam Motion but there action is pretty radical and tends to beat up the valvetrain. Crane seems to have the marine market covered pretty well. If you want a wild sounding engine, you need to go with a couple of 8-71's. The combination of belt whine and blower roll gets everyone's attention.

I've been using an Ultradyne 296/305 in my 509 with no problems whatsoever. Idles nice, I get compliments on it's sound and it pulls strong everywhere.

Crane ain't the only game in town.

what are the other specs on the cam @.050? Did you have any problem with reversion? Jonas did you start with 502's with hydraulic rollers or 454's with flat tappet hydraulic.and witch merlin heads?(320's?)
