Which Amsoil Gear Lube to Use?

I noticed Amsoil shows two different types of 80w90 gear lube...A basic and a marine version....What is the difference and which lube does everyone use....

I had the same question.

Actually, I use the Series 2000 75W/90 gear lube. It only comes in one version. I did quite a bit of research and decided that you should use either the Marine version of Amsoil's gear lube OR the Series 2000. I'm not sure what the difference is with the Marine (ALU) and non-marine (AGT), but it can't hurt to use the marine version. The key is (unless you are using Series 2000) to use the GL-4 lube. GL-5 lubes can contain sulphur-phosphorus additives to help them meet the more stringent GL-5 standard, but these additivies corrode yellow metals (like those in your outdrive).

However, from what I understand, Amoil's Series 2000 75W/90 gear lube (TGR) is 100% synthetic and therefore does not contain sulphur-phosphorus additivies. Note the label on the bottle says "100% synthetic" while the AGT and ALU labels do not say that. The TGR bottle also says that it is compatible with GL-4 and GL-5 applications. This is the best of both worlds because GL-5 is a better standard.

The same is true with Royal Purple in that they use a synthetic additive to meet the GL-5 standard. Here's more:

Anyway, I like the Series 2000. It is more expensive, but I think it is worth it.
