Cool 502 Gen VI and Water Reversion

Can someone tell me if you get water reversion from water backing up the exhaust or through normal running on a 502. I have a 2000 32ft Fountain, 502's with 43 hours. Should I be concerned with water reversion?

Not likely. The stock cam on the 454/502 Mags are very conservative. There is no overlap. Far from it, in fact.

Ric, IF what you are asking is backing up too fast it is a possibility if the engine were to stall while you still have reward momentum. If one were to stall while backing HARD the plugs should be removed and spin her over for a few seconds. I have seen on one occasion a boat backing off the trailer real hard and it stalled out. He cranked it up and clunk, hydrolocked at the dock.

I was just wondering, have read some comments on the forum that 502's had water reversion problems and since my fountain sets so low in the water in the rear I didn't know if I would have a problem. My boat sets year round on a lift and I just back up slow so it appears there should be no problem. Thanks

You'll be alright. The rubber flappers will stop any water from entering the exhaust if a motor should by chance die while backing up. Plus you have internal flappers inside the exhaust tips. So double protection.

My '99 has no problems.

The biggest conscern on these motors is not with reversion, but with the risers leaking at the manifold/riser gasket surface. Has nothing to do with the boat brand, just the Merc exhaust. Many people prefer to switch to the Gils or Stainless Marine exhaust to eliminate this known problem. I'm looking at doing this change over currently myself.
