What oil do you use for your initial start up on a new motor?
I have been told to use a non detergent 30 weight such as Valvoline 265 for the initial trailer or dyno run for the first ½ hour under light load. This supposedly helps with ring seating. Then change to a heavier race oil for initial, loaded break in on the water or dyno.
After break in change it again to your favorite synthetic such as Amsoil 20-50 Racing.
What’s your preferences?

Straight 30 WT. Low detergent allow for better breakin. If this is a hyd. roller or mech. roller. After breakin you can go to synthetic. If flat tappet. Need to run a quality Petrolium based oil on the dyno and in the boat for about 25 to 50 hours. Then go to synthetic.

Lycoming recomends .... ok guys... hold onto your hats... 100 w non detergent oil for the first 25 hours of use.... I don't think I want to be flying in an airplane with 100 w oil trying to circulate in the engine..but that is what my pilot buddy says they recomend for break-in. Scary....
