Ive done quite a few of these over the years and there is lits of things I have learned. I have used the 049's and the 781's and after I got done with them (machining and bigger valves and porting and bigger pistons to get the compression up where I wanted it, i found I had spent as much money as if I had bought heads that were ready. The Edelbrock aluminum marine heads have 110 cc chambers which gives you good compression with flat top pistons so you can stay with the stock ones if they are OK, and they come with the 1.88, 2.19 valves and inconel exhaust all for aorund 1200 a pair. Hard to beat. Thats what I am putting on my next one.

The "crap" peanut ports will make 400hp @ 5400 rpm ported with good exhaust and a hydraulic roller cam. The port work is a little pricy but still cheaper than buying new or spending the money on the 049 castings considering the additional work needed to make them work. The downside is low compression ratio with either head. The vortech head has a small combustion chamber and decent ports. I'd use these if you dont want to change pistons or buy new heads.

JBmarine has one set of Vortek heads for $500, will these heads need bigger valves(no idea what size) and port work to give me 400 to 450 hp along with cam, intake, carb and exhaust. The set up I want is the same as 330 on roids mentioned in earlier posts

Will my intake bolt to Vortec heads. I have an Edelbrock 2.0 for oval heads.

I have some early closed chamber large oval port heads. If you are interested. I put them on street rods all the time to bump up the compression with flat top pistons.

Andy,
I've been searching for the steroid thread. Can you give me a link?
