I am purchasing a new boat and noticed something I thought was weird, the motors are mounted about 1 1/2' above the stern, they are 94 Johnson 250s, pretty heavy to not rest on the structure of the boat, also there are only 4 bolts in each (2 mounting holes not used, is this abnormal with outboards? or is this something done to raise the motor height? have pics but don't know how to post

sounds normal. 4 bolts, around 2" off the transom.

How's it perform at that height? It might even need to go up higher...

outboards are bolted to the transom,they are not hung on the transom,so the install is OK. optimum engine height is achieved by moving the engine up one mounting hole at a time until ventilation in turns and water pressure is negatively affected

i don't know what year your 250 is but if it is the V8.OMC had specific mounting hardware for those heavier outboards.

it is a1994 V8, it just looked a little csary to me, my first boat with outboards, the props slightly cavitated on one very hard turn! other than that they bit hard, they are mach Stern Driver 4-blade props so it probably would have ventilated with 3-blades much worse?
