Gen IV camshaft end play
I have a problem with the end play of my Gen IV camshaft. It has about 1/4" Now granted the timing chain is loose, need to replace the gear set as well. There are no thrust washers installed, do I need one. My cam was wore down because of it. Any suggestions would be welcome.

You need a cam walk button. End play should be between .004 and .007". Use a good reinforced USA made cover or the button will work through it. The Chinese covers are junk and will not hold up.

You did not tell if the distributor was in place when you noticed that endplay. If the distributor is out, 1/4" endplay is normal on a stock gen IV.

I put the distibuter in without the intake manifold in place. But did see an abnormal amount of wear on the front lobes of the camshaft. I will try it with the manifold in place.

Shouldn't really need a button with a flat tapet cam, but it won't hurt.
Flat tappet cam lobes are angled, so the downforce of the lifters actually pushes the cam toward the rear of the engine. |
What GRIFF said.

Thanks, I will just replace the cam and gear set and be quiet.
