TRS Tranny Question

I had to pull the TRS drives on my Formula SR357. The boot had transmission fluid in it.

The mechanic is sayin neeed to pull engine and re-seal the tranny.

Is it possible that it got overfilled and that is overflo?

I got enough pain right now rebuilding the drives that got badly zapped by electrolysis from home-made barge the marina parked next me.

Thanks for help--

BTW--pics of boat in FORMULA forum and pics of Arnesons posted also

Yep, got to come out and be re-sealed. May need Merc# 57758a2 yoke if its pitted too (expensive). Seal rides on that yoke (need good seal surface).

Overflow would probably come out the vent or dipstick. That would end up in the bilge too. Replace the rear seal. Not sure if you could do it through the transom, but I'm sure that would be kind of a pain.

Is it the merc trans or the BW trans?

Trs Tranny

It's the BorgWarner--1987 vintage

Yip, What marinetrans said, I just rebuilt my B/Ws. Engines must come out, the seal is in the tail stock housing area. might as well up grade tranny clutches. I warped my stock brass clutches with only 420 hp. I rebuilt both with graphite clutches for 150.00

force 320,

where did you order the Graphite clutches? I just replaced a trans and now I have a spare that I want to rebuild and or sell.

I also have 2 questions on Borg Warner trannys & TRS drives.Mine are the oriiginal units in my 1976 Cigarette Awesome. When doing alot of forward & reverse shifting Idling through a busy cove, the transmission fluid wants to all boil out of the vents.
The 2nd question is when I put the trannys in reverse they squeal. They have done it since I have had it & when the previous owner had it. I have not run the boat very much in the 1 1/2 yrs I have had it.

How much work is it to rebuilt these with the new clutches? I have both my motors and trannys out, and while they are out should I put new clutches in? The tranny's work fine, but I am pushing about 550 hp, which seems to be close to the limit.
