Need Help with exhaust gaskets for SBC Vortec Heads
Well I am getting all my parts together for the install of my heads when I get them back from the shop next week. I have never noticed this before but I guess the vortec heads use different exhaust gaskets than the stock mercruiser/gm heads....I was Looking thru Jegs and Mr Gasket lists a Ultra-Seal gasket #720-7505 just for vortecs.....Fel-pro does not. I called Jegs and they looked thru the books and no explantion is given for the difference. He said that the Fel-pro1404 has the same dimensons as the Mr-Gasket. The Fel-pro 1404 is listed as a "sbc race". Both the 7505 and the 1404 have
1.5 x 1.5 size openings. Stock SBC size is listed as 1.38 x 1.38....Fel-Pro lists a Stock gasket #375-1444 but again the size is 1.38 x 1.38. Which gasket size do I go with? What is everyone using for their vortec heads....

If you have gaskets try to check them against ports. Make sure there is enough "meat" left aroung the holes to prevent blow out. They can be trimmed. I use Mr gasket on my Merc motors. They are inexpensive and don't usually contain steel that rusts out. Auto zone stocks them in the aisle. Also manifolds can be ground on a little. BBB
