I'm hoping to talk to someone who has ran or set up a v bottom with outboards. I run a 28' Pantera with 225 hp Yamahas', 1.86 gears, 15" set back, propshafts 3-4 inches below bottom. I get about 60 mph @ 5800 rpm. I think this boat should run at least 65 mph, am i off the mark here. I think I may need props with more bow lift.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. THANKS

Or lift your motors higher. I have never had a outboard boat that I have owned or been on that has run any good with the motors that deep. You may want to check with the folks from Pantera and see what they recommend. Your numbers are not way off but I think you can probably do better by lifting your motors some.

i have a porta bracket with twin 250's on my pantera 28. when i lift the motors up i go slightly faster, but i only hit 63. I havnt tried switching the rotation, seems like too much work for 1 or 2 mph.

I have tried going higher and lower with my jackplate but can't seem to get any significant results. Im curious to know what props you run and and how much set back does that bracket provide.

I should also add my motors are not counter rotating.

One other thing is when I raise the motors up to far my water pressure on one motor bounces up and down but judging from water discharge and no overheat alarms sounding off I think its probably okay, although I usualy run them just low enough to avoid this. What I am getting at is how much water pressure is considered safe

I think the bracket is 12" setback with 12" lift. i usually have about 15-16 psi of water pressure and 118 degrees on the temp gauge. I was told that its bad to drop below 12 psi of water pressure. My props are counter rotating.

Really doesn't sound that slow to me.

On a long boat like that, get all your weight as far aft as you can.

Run Merc chopper or Mirage for bow lift.

If you have to trim extremely high for best speed, then you need more setback. Always run the motors as high as you can while still maintaining over 12 pounds of water pressure.

Not familiar with your water pickups, but if they are on the sides of the gearcase, epoxy the top one (if there are 4) or two (if there are 5 or 6) holes closed.

What is the pitch and type of props (cleaver or chopper) you are running now? Are you hitting the rev limiter? Also how much does the boat weigh?

I run chopper props, they get the bow up out of the water, I also have 24" setback and propshaft is even with bottom of the boat. Speeds seem alright to me though. Keep water pressure above 12psi.
