S&B, Go to the junkyard and find stock rims. Get the the 4.10's and buy a set of tires that will just clear the fenders. Use a tire/gear/rpm calculator to determine what tires will give you the desired RPM for kid hauling. This is really your best solution. Just swap em if you are towing a distance.
http://www.4lo.com/ Fill in 4 out of 5 parameters. Use 1 to 1 for T-case and Tranny.

A 30" tire with 3.73 will give the same RPM as 4.10 with 33". You do the Carter conversion for Metric tires.

Welcome to OSO.

I do not know what cab configuration you have of if it is 2 or 4 wheel drive but you relize that that package is probably only rated to pull in the 8000 lb range acording to the GMC website.

yes the truck is rated for 8800 max but with the EZ lift load bars it take about 1000 lbs off of the truck and it has been doing just fine the truck is a 2003 gmc extended cab Z71 so yes it is 4 whl drive

Go with the 4.10 Axle.

The rating IS IMPORTANT, 12000 lbs. for insurance/liability. If you have an accident they may declare you at fault (even if your not).

The mileage around town on my Avalanche is about 11.4.

Hi-way 12-13

Towing about 10 (5000 lb trailer).

The extra securtiy is so much better. The extra gas mileage on the 3.73 is nil. The 8.1 just drinks fuel period.

But, it does not sound like a diesel or smell like one.

Thanks for all the input - I went with the Burban with the 8.1 litre and the 3:73. Pulled the boat for about 15 miles or so today and what a great ride! The 8.1 has all the pull power that I need - got the boat up to 60 mph in no time at all! I pulled up a hill that used to slow me down with my 31' and didn't even have to down shift to get up it. Thanks again for all the input - it really helped.

305 50R 20's are 32.00" dia. 265 75R 16's are 31.64" dia. Not much diff (1.1%). Put on tires equal to or bigger than 305 70R 16's or 285 75R 16's (32.80" dia or larger) and you may rethink your desire for 3.73 gears.
