where is OIL Bypass valve?

I'm confused, is the bp valve in the block on a '97 502 or is it in the bolt on oil filter/ cooler adapter? No more ? after this I promise.

It's in the block, in the filter
adapter pad area, just in front
( towards the front of the engine)
of the center opening ( where a
oil filter would thread on)

Hope this helps.

Why is it needed?

Griff 05-01-2004 03:59 AM

So if the filter gets clogged, the oil will circulate past it.

BTW, thats what it's for. Whether or not its really needed is up for debate.

Bypass goes in round hole that is at 1 o'clock (has lip) on filter pad. As you can see, oil comes from oil pump to oblong hole, thru filter & then to engine. If filter is pluged then oil goes thru bypass on side & then to engine.
