I have this sludge leaking from where my sea water pump impeller housing bolts on. It is not water, oil, gas, gear oil. or ps fluid. It is thicker than gear oil. I can't quite say what it smells like. It has a solvent type smell. Any body seen this before? See the pic below. It is leaking where part#1 bolts on.

I guess everybody is out boating.

I took the impeller housing off and I noticed that this stuff is coming out of a small weep hole on the portion of the pump in between the pulley and the impeller housing. I am thinking it smells like grease with a little gas mixed in. Any ideas?

I am not running that style but if you have what I see you need to check your fuel pump if you have not already. I looks like you have a mechnical fuel pump driven off of water pump drive housing and if your fuel pump leaks any at all you will have gas and oil mixed. If you have not pulled the fuel pump off I woould and check. If you do not have a mechanical fuel pump like I think forget everything I suggested.

This water pump housing has a cam in it to actuate the fuel pump. Normally there is oil in the cavity so the fuel pump shaft and cam lobe is lubericated. The seals might be bad causing either oil or fuel to leak.

It is a stock 1997 454 Mag MPI. It is a mechanical fuel pump. I wil check the gasket between the fuel pump and the housing.

You need a new fuel pump. Your current one is leaking fuel into the oil reservior for the pump cam. The fuel mixed with the gear oil is then leaking past the seals into your bilge.

Replace fuel pump. Drain the oil reservior and refill with gear oil. Go boating!
