Default mercruiser motor number

if i get the number off the block,or mercruiser tag, where can i look up what it is. im looking at a used 502 carb motor, owner says that its a 420hp. but after asking around everybody says the 420 was a 454. the number givento me was taken from near the bell housing and is F224424. does that do any good to you guys?

thanks for the help

The 454 420hp motor was a variation of the 400 cyclone. It had gil exhausts, I think. Built late 80s/early 90s.
The base 502 comes as a 410hp version. That may be what he's referring to.
See if you can get the block code off the front of the block. That may be a better indication of what it is.

look down on the motor were the bell housing bolts to the block(left side) thats the casting #.Also it will have either 7.4 or 8.2 cast on the side of the block about where the motor mount is.
