Sealant around fuel sender?

I replaced the gasket which resides between the fuel sender and the tank (standard five-hole deal). There was no indication that sealant had been used previously. The new gasket is thick and semi-soft, plus the screws had plastic cones around them to ensure a good seal of the holes.
I re-installed without using sealant, but now gasoline is seeping out. Should I re-assemble with Permatex 2 or something else?
Thanks in advance,

One thing about Permatex #2 is that you will have a rough time trying to get it back apart!! When I replaced my gasket I did not use any sealant. Try tightening the screws again first if you haven't already.
