HI,
I have a 95 340 Powerquest with t454 mags/bravos and Gaffrig non-liquid speedo. Its been calibarted once....and worked fine since.
Issue: I noticed the lense cracked and coincident with that it started acting up. Specifically it would take many minutes to register speed and when it does not the correct speed (compared to GPS)...then it was slow to reach 0. Upon inspection of the speedo, I noticed the back was damp and drops of water below it (but the fittings are tight).
What I've done: I have checked the fitting on the drive, removed it, cleaned it out and verified that the line is clear from that point to the speedo. Retested and no improvement.
Questions: Where the fitting attaches to the outdrive is there anything before that (i.e. in the drive it self that can be blocked) or is that cavity the same that feeds the water supply to the engine?
Suggestons? Seems to me its the speedo given this information....
Thanks.
Jeff

I would scrap that water pickup spedo and replace it with a GPS spedo. They are accurate, have no bounce, and tell the truth. They have come down in price. Call Fred at Trick marine he has great prices & allot of inventory.

back to the top....I am checking into a GPS speedo...but in the meantime I did unplug the little hole in the front of the outdrive....but no luck.
Line is clear to the speedo.
I used a paperclip...went in about 1/2 inch....is that as far as it should go to unclog?
Any other suggestions on how to inusre the lower end is not plugged?
Thanks
Jeff

No it should go deeper. You can also unplug the hose from where it attaches to the drive and blow compressed air throught it but you should be able to go in an inch or so, take a drill bit just smaller than the hole and clean it out good.
