Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

I have a 2002 with 425hp motor. mirage 22 4 blade. I am getting 61 mph on gps. the dash reads 65. I thought it should go 65-70. Am I dreaming or do I need a different set up. thanks for any input.

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

22 pitch? u could be running at least 25 your definatly not gonna get speed off a 22 pitch on that big of engine, its a 496 ho correct?

jcimprover 08-05-2004 05:53 PM

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

Yes its a 496 HO. Next question Which brand? 3 blade or 4 blade? Also It runs right at 5000 rpm now. will I lose rpm with a bigger pitch?
thanks

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

go with a mirage plus and yes the bigger prob u go the less rpm. talk to houston prop he will direct u in the right direction for what u need

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

a larger pitch prop is not the ans. end of story that boat is not going to do 70 with that setup. you are spinning 5k now and you will cut 200rpm per pitch size. going to a larger prop is not the ans.

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

You need a bigger prop and a blower.

Post this in the Baja section and see if other 275 owners run the same speed, 61 sounds correct to me.

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

my boats a 2000 272 (almost identical to yours),when it was stock w/415 hp 502 at our elevation of 600-900 feet,i tried various props(24 pitch 4 blade-rpm'd too low,23 pitch 3blade,23 pitch hydromotive. 60-62 mph fully loaded was all it was good for,64-65 with no passengers ,fuel or coolers (what fun is that anyways). Their are alot of bse'rs and liars when it comes to speed of their boats, especially these baja's,ive never seen a 272 or 25 outlaw that could hit a HONEST 70 mph w/STOCK 502 or 496 let alone a 454 mag,gps is a heart breaker! 61 is probably correct ,your rpm's sound right, maybe with some various props you may find one that will give you 2-3 mph more but pure and simple it is going to take 15-20 horsepower per mph to go beyond that. much more prop and you will be further away from your horsepower peak and only go slower,a 23 pitch will probably give you a little more at the sacrifice of takeoff(most 272's and 25 outlaws come with them stock). What elevation are you at(the higher above sea level the slower your boat will go,do you always fill your tank and do you have any unnecesary weight onboard? My boat was sensitive to weight w/stock engine,if you want a couple mph then you could think about leaving crazy cousin eddie at home and running 1/2 tk of gas,400-600 pounds of gas and extra passengers will translate to 1-3 mph! If you did want your boat to go signifigantly faster loaded the same as you have been running, say 70,your going to need 120-150 hp more, your only going to get that from exstensive modifications to your motor,a supercharger or turbo or a bigger engine. azsm has been developing a intake system and upgrade kit that is supposed to take a 425 hp 8.1 to the 600 hp range,i am skeptical but i guess its possible, but it was as exspensive as a blower kit so it must do something, good luck,Smitty

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

articalfriens, tru dat. it is hard and prob very frusterating to people with simmilar boats not getting the speed "there buddy" is getting with the same power, boat ect. people just tend to lie, fib, or whatever. gps does not lie, 61 with that setup is a good true number. there may be a few more mph there but prob more frustration than it is worth to try 15 diff props, less fuel, ect. it cost big $ to make "real hp" no not what a manufacturer tells you you are at but what a dyno tells you with wet headers and set up the same way it will be in the boat. one of my boats is a 25' switzer v bottom. in the 91 powerboat with a 502 they said 71 in there test. not sure i ever ran that fast with the stock motor. now i run 945 hp and i am fluttering on 100, still have not broken it but i am very very close. so figure it took me 19hp per mph i have increased over stock 415hp. keep in mind it is very easy to drok 5k into a motor and only get a 5-10mph increase. you need to figure out if that is worth it to you or not. you may also be limited by hull design. some hulls will only run so fast. be happy with your speeds or be ready to drop big money. I will not put out there what i have into it but the motor, procharger, drive, and steering system are worth almost twice what i paid for the boat. just something to think about.

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

I believe you have a problem....or they have substatially increased the weight of the 275. I had a 2000 272 with 502 mag. Salt water boat, but she would run 68+ with a 23 Mirage plus. I tried a 22 Bravo and was all over the rev limiter. Ended up running a 24 Bravo because the mid range handling was markedly better than the Mirage. I would see 67+ on a regular basis with that prop. Those are no bullsh*t GPS numbers. I ran right with Reckless' Sunsation 288 and BillR's PQ 280.

Have you checked for hook?

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

Macklin, yours sounds believable, factoring in the fact of sea level and salt water. 502 procharger,me and you are in the same boat,i am approaching the original purchase price in upgrades on my boat also in my quest for speed! it has cost me (when you include broken drives etc ) about 2800 $ per mph for the 22 mph i have gained over stock, its the old saying"speed cost money, how fast do you want to go".!You sure don't upgrade boats exstensively expecting to ever recoup your investment so you might as well beat the snot out of it and have fun!
JC.improver,i was just down in the north channel and anchor bay last sunday!

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

Arcticfriends, I Was Out There. I Was At Strawberry Island From About 1:00 To 4:00 Then Metro Until About 8:00. I Was Out Tuesday With 5 People And Nearly A Full Tank And 58 Mph Was It. I Had An 89 Sport 226 With A 454 330 Hp. I Didn't Have A Gps Back Then But My Transom Mounted Speedo Said 62 With A 23 Mirage Prop. I Added A Hydromotive Nose Cone And A Balanced And Blue Printed Turbo I Prop 23.5 Pitch And Could 64 To 65. With A Borrowed Blueprinted Turbo Ii I Saw 67. I Use To Race Snowmobiles And Drove My Wife Nuts Trying To Go Faster All The Time. If I Start Doing It With The Boat, I May Need To Buy The Same Boat A Second Time If You Know What I Mean. I Have The Green Light For Prop And Outdrive Work But Motor Work Is Out Of The Question. I Bought The Boat With 425 Hp Thinking I Would Be Happy. (go Figure)

When powerboat tested the 275 with h.o. I believe it did 64-65, so I would think you are a bit slow..

Most Baja's have hook in this area unless someone removed it.

Macklin 08-06-2004 09:19 AM

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

Hook in the hull. Take a long straight edge (4 - 6') and place it against the hull at the transom towards the bow. Optimally the straight edge would touch the hull along its entire lenght. If there is a hook in the hull you will see it. There should not be more than a 1/4" of space. At least that is what I learned from this site.

Macklin what where your slip #'s on the 272 with the 3 and 4 blade props.

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

Thanks Russ. A picture is worth a thousand words. What about possible hook on the running surface of the hull.....or pad? Should he check for that??

Macklin 08-06-2004 09:28 AM

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

Russ, do you have the link to the site that has the neat slip calculator? If so, post it for me and I will calculate. I have the link saved as a favorite at work. I am at home today.....heading down to the boat now. See ya! :D

I will need to look. How do you remove it? (hook)

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

I obviously had a strong 502 in my boat cause I have seen 272 speeds posted in many threads both here and other sites. I also added stainless marine exhaust and Vortech flame arrestor, which really allowed the motor to run better.

I don't beleave Baja puts hook in the pad or running surface. I don't beleave his prob is in the bottom. I think he needs to change props. I'm going through this same problem. Ran a 24 Bravo 1 to 5200 rpm's and 66 mph on a 252 islander. But it seems like the boat really doesn't like the 4 blade runs to level. And the slip #'s seem high to me. Thats why I was asking what yours where.
My motor should be putting out around 450 to 490 hp it's not a stock 502.

heres a pic of mine running at WOT with the 4 blade

Agreed. Some prop testing is definitely in order. I can not believe JC is not on the rev limiter with that prop!

Call Julie at Throttle Up. They are the best! They have a great prop test program.

And if you want to remove the hook I would look into having a profesional do it. Will cost around a grand or more to have it done. I was told around $1500 to remove the hook and blueprint the bottom. Haven't done it yet.

I cant imagine how that boat could spin a 22? I have the same set up
with a 26 hittin the limiter once in a while. I'm trying a 28 tommorrow.
The 27'S on my lake are claiming 65 with 454 mags. Probably not gps.
I would think there are a couple to be had. I've hit 67 gps, but then
a 27 fountain is half the size of a 27 baja. I'll be on st.clair tommorrow
if anyones out playing. Look me up. I'll have her wear the thong so I'll
be easy to spot. JC

Fountain 27,
Everyone including me will be at muscemoot bay for the big raft party. I should be tied to a 33 and 37 sundancer. I have blue and gray graphics flying a pirate sock from my ship to shore antenna. I will look for the thong, but I'm sure I'll see many out there. I heard as many as 1500 boats for this event.
I will look for you.

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

Fountain 27ho,its hard to compare a 272 baja to a 27 ft fountain, your hull is definately more effiecient. A buddy of mine in northern michigan has one and when our boats were both stock w/502's he always had 4 mph on me,we both put prochargers on them at same time and he was able to run 79 w/5psi boost where i had to run 8psi or so to run even with him. I do believe jc could run a few mph more with a 23 pitch 3 blade, i never really hear of people running 22 pitch 4's on boats like his,but much else is going to start costing him some real money,Smitty

I have the same boat but with a 23 mirage plus, with quarter tank of gas and three people the best I have been able to get is 66.7 on a hand held garmin GPS. I did have her trimmed up pretty good

jcimprover 08-10-2004 07:35 AM

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

I took some advice I received. I left crazy cousin eddie at home, got rid of the water skis, knee board, gas grill, and fifty gallons of gas, I saw 65.8 on gps with 3 people on board. I am still considering a balanced and blue printed prop. I would like to know if anyone on lake St Clair would be interested in a prop swap day. Of course I have only one prop so I am really looking for a sponsor that has been down this road already.
Thanks

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

Now that sounds better. I found a june 02 powerboat test on your boat.
62.4@4800 23 mirage. 496mag, not ho, should be 66.4 with ho. Every
person in the boat cost you 1 mph. you would have been at 67 alone.
Thats probably as good as it gets. By the way I was running next to you sat. morning coming out of clinton river heading to metro. You stopped to talk to 2 boats and I went in to metro. Later, JC, also. My business is called
J.C. Carpet. I'm not stealing your initials.

When I saw you I asked myself, hmm wonder if thats the same guy from waterford. Small world. What kind of mph were you running that day? Did you go to the raft party at muscemoot? I figured if you from waterford you would have been using the launch at the end of hall road.

Re: Baja 275 What Should It Do? Mph

I always launch at the clinton river, DNR, That was my first time out with my 28" prop. Its easier to test and compare on my lake because I dont have to worry about getting launched. I had a best of 69 speedo(67gps) @ 5200
with my 26. I hoped to bring the rpm's down. I was running in the river
getting beat by a 29 fountain and saw 69 on the speedo at only 4600rpm
The boat is still on the trailer, I need to do some more testing. I was hoping
for 4800-4900. 4600 is probably to low. We ran up to sarnia that night and hooked up with some friends. I was in muscamoot until about 5. Suppose to do indian river/mullet/burt this weekend. Still watching the weather to see if I have to cancel and go somewhere else. JC

Russ is right.Every BAJA ive seen had the hook.If removed it will let you carry the nose better with less trim in turn more speed.less wetted surface.Great picture RUSS.

Fountain 27,i'm going to mullet/burt lk this wknd too, you'd never believe this but i have a spare 28 pitch 4 blade merc that was tuned to a 27 pitch by hydromotive in ohio,it's not enough for my 540 i have now (i use it if i'm going to have 8 people and a full tk of gas) and i hit my rev limiter at 6000,i would be willing to let you try it and more than willing to trade you even up for your stock 28 as long as it's not damaged,pm me with a phone # and we'll have to hook up,Smitty

Another small world. I just bought this prop last week and havn't got it
tested out yet. I would be up for testing though.
Are you going regardless of weather? there calling for rain sat. and sun.
Where are you staying? I have res. at the landings sat. and sun. night.
I planned on driving most of the way fri. night. and getting there sat. am.
I'll blow it off if the weather doesn't improve. I hate to tow my boat 4 hours
to sit in the rain. I have no bimini. What kind of boat are you running?
