Exhaust risers?
I pulled off the risers tonight and a couple of passages were clogged and alot of rust. Some scaling as well. Is this normal on risers. I quess my main question is it ok to clean them up and reuse them dont see any holes etc etc just mainly alot of rust or should I replace them. thanks for any info

Re: Exhaust risers?
I had a 30 Scarab that I ended up blowing one of the motors as a result of leaky risers. Spun bearings, bent valves, etc. If they are the steel ones and you are seeing decent size pieces of rusty metal flaking from the inside, I would spend the cash on a new set of risers. I believe that the recent Merc risers are aluminum. Cheaper to change now than to pay later. How are your manifolds? Are they the steel ones? Prices have gotten fairly cheap for a set of Stainless Marine or similar manifolds/risers. If you are going to keep your boat for many more years, it is worth the price.

Re: Exhaust risers?
Or, if they have reasonable wall thickness left and the gasket surfaces are in good shape, you "service" them. To do this soak them in muratic acid, rinse, rod out, soak in muratic acid, rinse and they are ready to go again.
