Procedure for removing the engine and trans
 
I'm removing the engine and trans to rebuild them for next year and want to know if the outdrive has to come off to get the trans uncoupled. The setup is a Mrcruiser B/W TRS combo.

Yes, the drive needs to come off. The tail stock for the trans needs to lift up and forward to remove. Plus, you will need to keep it off to reinstall the engine/trans.

No, the outdrive does not have to come off to get the engine out. With the engine secured by a chainfall and enough upward pressure applied to absorb it's weight remove all fasteners, hoses and wires attached to the engine. Also remove the bolts that attach the BW trans to the bell housing but not the two large bolts in the trans tailstock that secure it to the inner transom plate. With that accomplished move the boat back a couple of inches and it will seperate the engine from the trans at the bell housing. Hoist the engine out. The trans will remain in place secured by the large bolts in the tailstock. Or you can take engine and trans out together and leave the drive on. When the rebuild is complete, the drive should be removed and the powerplant reinstalled using a alignment tool.

He needs to rebuild both the engine and trans, can you take the engine and trans out without pulling the drive? It would be good to know if it is possible. Also, there are two permanently lubricated bearings in the tail stock to check/replace. One of mine locked up and ruined the drive coupler on the output of the trans. The coupler set me back lots of bucks over the price of a $50.00 ball bearing.

Yes the engine and trans can be taken out without removing the drive. But when it comes time to re-install the drive will have to come off cause theres no way to insert the driveshaft into the tail stock with the drive on...

Drives have to be off to do an engine alignment. If it is not aligned damage to the u joint or worse the drive is inevitable
