Urgent! Engine stand ??

1 Attachment(s)
Hey Guys,

I just put my engine on a stand. This stand is rated at 1250 lbs. Is it normal for the engine to sag forward like this? Is this safe?

Thanks,
Dave M.

Mine looked the same way. Make sure that you are using Gd8 bolts. I had one bend.

Re: Urgent! Engine stand ??

I think your rotating pivot is about to fail. The fingered bracket looks square to the back of the block and the deflection appears to be where the finger bracket attaches to the pipe that goes through the stand upright. I would remove and check out the support. I have an identical stand and it worked fine for a fully dressed set of small blocks I had, but I do not think the weld is holding.

That doesn't look good to me. I would be afraid of that.

Re: Urgent! Engine stand ??

It shouldnt be leaning over that far...stick a 2x4 under the balancer till you can get more parts off!!!
Does it lean like that when the motor is upside down...if so buy a new one.

Re: Urgent! Engine stand ??

Are you sure that stand is rated for 1250#? Looking at it, it looks like one I have that is only rated for 750#. My 1250# has 2 legs that "V" out from the engine post.

Re: Urgent! Engine stand ??

You should not support the weight of the engine from the balancer.

Re: Urgent! Engine stand ??

Something ain't right there, You don't even have the heads on it. Get 2 4X4s and support it at the mounts. pump up that engine lift until you do that. And checkmate is right, don't support it on the balancer.

Mine will do that , but when fully dressed. You are missing at least one head

I would not leave an engine hanging like that. I'd be afraid to come out and find it laying on the floor busted. I have 2 engine stands and neither one ever tillted like that with a dressed big block on them.

Thanks Guys!

It does not look like that piece was welded squarely. When the weight is off the stand it is square. When weight is applied it is flexing. I took the engine off the stand and set it on the floor with some wood blocks.

PHUKIN made in China! I got the stand from Northern Tools. This isn't the first time I've been disappointed with the quality of their products.

LMAO :D

There aint no 1250lb stand in the world with 3 legs. I use a stand like that to assemble the short block only then transfer it to a summit rolling floor caddy. you can put everything on accept the rear bell housing and you can run them right on the stand. I break the cam in on one and it great to be able to check for any leaks I will try to get a pic tomarow.

P.S.get that thing off that stand soon, I'm getting the fingernails on the blackboard shivers when I look at it!

Put a 4x4 across the legs and a 4x4 up to the balancer.

You just need to stay away from the cheap Chinese crap. It sure does`nt look like a 1250# capacity stand to me.
Just think about this the next time you get underneath a vehicle that you raised with a chinese jack and have setting on chinese jack stands.

Like I said, Toy, and how long did that run in a offshore boat! I could use that to start my TAD! :D :D Just kiddin! sounds like a cool motor!

Do what atricfriend did to the second picture. thats what it needs.

If you have a harbor freight they have a 2000 stand that is orange with 2 legs up front. Its on sale for 79.00. I have 3 of them and I have put my BBC blown, innercoller, carbs fully rigged motor on it and it doesn't sag at all!!I did change out the casters and put grade 9 bolts in it just for the heel of it.

To build on what Rob said, Harbor Freight is the nuts. I'd hate to estimate how much money I've spent there the last year or so. My friend bought a rolling cherry picker hoist for pulling engines for $149. Has a 10 ton hydraulic ram with a super sensitive release knob. Works the nuts.

This is the the one you need. Best Bang for the buck.
I have some of the ones you are using with two legs Bought them from summit. I had to weld all the lower brackets. I dont trust them.
I run cradles when there fully assembled. Go with the ones from harbor freight. Or weld the ones you have.

Thats a scary looking setup.

Here is some picks of how I modified my stand .I added the rear shelf ,when your installing bearings and pistions you can line them up in order , I also like putting the tourqe wrench on it less chance of droping it  .I changed all the bolts out to L9 prob over kill but the bolts that come with the it are junk.I changed the casters to a better grade that roll easer ,I have broken one before going over a crack in the floor.

I also added 6 inches height to it . I added a tube inside the bottom tube it gave it 6 inches, that way your not leaning over ,easer on the back.

Also added the bottom shelf ,the tray is galvinized so it want rust.it clamps on to remove if want.

The only other thing I want to add to it is a ballbearing head for turning the motor over easer.and maybe the color :D

No engine stand is rated for what manufacturer states. I always go for dual leg stand. Since all I build is chevys I weld the stand at all joints. This will make all of the difference in the world.

I had one of those made in china cherry pickers. It was rated at 1000, 2000, and 3000 lbs depending on how far you pulled the boom out. It would want to tip forward at the 3000lb setting when pulling my 400 pontiac motor out of my car. Had to have my buddy stand on the back of the hoist for ballast while I jacked motor out. They are crap. Doesnt the government check the safety on these things? I should have let the engine fall on my buddy and we could have sued the manufacturer. I always have my camera available. :drink:

Here is a better pic of this POS. It has two legs up front but still can't hold the weight. You can see the upright is not square.

I had the same problem. ****can that stand, and spend some money for a good OTC brand stand. I got mine, and dropped a full dress HP500 with exhaust on it, and it didn't even budge. Plus, it has a cool geared crank to rotate the motor. You won't regret the money spent. Plus it rolls around the garage with no effort.

Re: Urgent! Engine stand ??

strip poker, You mentioned that you wnted to add bearings on the head to make it easier to rotate the engine. DONT DO IT!!! I thought that was a great idea myself a few years back and fabricated a stand with a roller bearing head. as soon as you loosen the lockdown the motor just spins to the heavier side and when you have pulled on head but not yet drained the oil this makes a large mess. I now have one with a gear crank like the OTC that is the way to go.

Re: Urgent! Engine stand ??

Be careful with the name brand American made stands, hoists, jacks, ect.such as OTC Blackhawck Lincoln as many of these manufactures are selling imports to compete. Most people won't buy a 1000 buck floor jack that is designed to be used daily and rebuilt when wore out when they can buy 10 cheapies for the same price.Once I have the engine assembled to short block point and don't need to flip her upside down anymore I instal the engine mounts and wedge some 2 x 4's that are cut to the right length under them for added security when she's sitting unatended.

The hoist from Harbor Freight I was referring to is rated for 4000# and weighs 225#. It's a well built unit. We pulled/installed several engine/transaxle/transfer case assemblies with it and were impressed with how well you could regulate the unit with the big knob on the release valve. We did NOT use it with the boom fully extended. I'm sure there's some real junk out there from China and the USA. Just one persons opinion that this isn't one of them

I know what you mean about the brand names, when i first started doing rXr's in my transmision business i always bought 69$ floor jacks at sam's club. They would last 6 months to a year then we'd drag them out to the curb. A couple years ago i decided it was time to start buying hd american jacks, jackstands, oil drain tks etc. I bought a Lincoln floor jack, over 300$,i have seen that jack in old timers shops 20 years old and still working.Mine looks like it was made in china and is wore out already!!!!Its hard to find quality stuff that will last and is made in the US,Smitty

I bought a good "china" 4 wheel 1250# stand on EBAY for $99 incl shipping(the guy sells many). I have a couple of old 750#"china" stands that have had dressed BBCs that didn't sag like that photo(although they were strained),sumpin ain't bolted on right.
