502,
You will love this engine, but I wouldnt go with the 2 speed!! Go with Twin Disc Trani's, and The WCM custom air vent.
The 42 Fountain Gets on plane in 5 1/2 secs and gets up and boogies!
You wont believe the torque of these engines and yes you can turn those puppies up with no major work!!!!!

By the way WCM has a custom paint and chrome package for these engines and man oh man it looks so good!!!

The Twin Disc Arneson drive is the bomb!!!!

This package will turn gas heads into diesel men in a heartbeat!!

Hi Björn! Nice to see you on the board again. How is your OE project proceeding?

I think it's a great idea. You won't believe the acceleration due to diesel torque. I would definitely go with the ZF 2-speed trannie as this will be as much a revelation as the engine itself. You'll outaccelerate 90% of gas boats and the second gear will give you a decent top end in spite of relatively limited power. I don't know the way your boat will behave, but I have experience with 50 and 38 Hustlers as well as Buzzi boats and you won't believe how user-friendly this setup is. The 38 Hustler with the identical setup to yours ran 84 mph and cruised economically at 60 while burning less than 20 gallons per hour. This will give you incredible range and combined with the fact that you don't need to thottle these engines because load governors keep RPMs constant no matter what the prop does, you'll have a true offshore endurance wave crusher.

And yes, you can turn them up just by playing with the fuel flow and turbo boost. I had mine up to 550hp. with no ill effects on reliability. I have 1400 hours on mine now. No problems. I believe Innovation Marine in Florida have done some upgrades for Yanmars, it would be interesting to speak to them if you consider turning them up a notch.

If you do plan to do that, make sure to take the ZF 312 2-speed trannie which will take up to 900 horsepower. The ZF 110 model is very reliable behind a standard Yanmar 440hp. but it's at its rating limit. I believe it's rated to 462hp. So putting 550+ through it is pushing it a bit. It will live but you need to be gentle and nurse it, sort of like a Bravo XR behind a 700hp. motor. But nursing it spoils the fun so go for a Yanmar, a 312 2-speed trannie and Arnesons and you'll have a package which you won't be able to break...

Super termoli ! Thanks,you`r right,but I`v allready bought the TS 110s,
I`m thinking on taking the Yanmars up to around 500,and get the right gear
ratio and prop pitch, what aboat 1:1 ratio on the Arnesons ?

502, I think a TS 110 will live if you don't turn the Yanmars up too much. Just make sure to fit the electronic boxes which will stop you from downshifting above 1500 rpm. If you do not have that electronic protection, the downshifting trick could end your trannie's life instantly. I use the 110 + Yanmar setup with Trimax drives and I have 1.36 and 1.1 ratios. Don't really know about Arnesons but I believe Fountain went with ASD8, Yanmars and 1:1 ratio and it worked pretty damn well. Did you already purchase the motors? I stock Yanmar diesels and have great prices on 440s. PM me if you need more info...

Fountain dont run two speed on the 48's or 42. Only on the Buzzi rigs and we can get the 42 to plane quicker. They use the TD tranni's.
They use a 1.13 on the 42.
MTI and WCM put together a Diesel 39. 440's, ASD8 and TD tranni's.

We are ordering a tunnel flap for it but she runs 93+ right now without turning them up!!!

FYI: My father around 9 years back went to japan to do development work on the 440's they had a Alum. 47 cougar with 4 x 440's only they were no longer 440, but they had those babies putting out 630 ponnies.
I tried to buy the engines but yanmar destroyed all but one so nobody got ahold of them!!!
We did the first 42 with reggie, we had the engines making a true 510hp and ran 680 hrs on them. Of course with the TD tranni's
I race a 42 in P3 class SBI, the boat is a pleasure hull. It planes in 5.5 secs. And will pull 4-5 boat lenghts on 500 EFI 42 from 40 to 70 MPH
It has a Top speed of 88 MPH.
ZF are good but I think the 2 speed is a pain, and you got to shift perfectly every time or the tranni's wont last 10 mins..
I make a custom Air ventilation to prop, with a shut and it is just like a two speed but without the shifting!!!
I will give you more info if you want PM me and I will let you know!!

But whatever you go with Im sure you will love the engines!!!!!

I will send you some photos below of the Custom stuff we do!!
