I thought the 496 had cast pistons? Still OK if you don't abuse it but something to check.

Well if this helps I own a Formula 377. It has twin 502 merc with 4 blade props and she sure can put you back in your seet. But Mercury switched from using the 502s to the 496s. They are a nice torqy motor. I also have an 03 2500 chevy with the 496 and the allison transmission and she pulls that boat AMAZING! If I were you I would put the Mercury 496 HO in that boat. It will work out perfectly.

Stupid question,
Doesn't the automotive version have FI that requres an O2 sensor?
I didn't think the marine version uses an O2 sensor?

Last I knew they used a oxygen sensor. My 2003 has one on each motor hense why the headers for the 496 have it drilled and tapped.

I have a pair of stock Merc 496 Mag PCM's that I am about to put on ebay. If you are interested, email me: [email protected]

I have no idea what they are worth.

The injectors would have to be changed to the marine injector ( larger output). The marine duty fuel injector which is 35% bigger than the truck injector. As for crankshafts, some of the early 2001 and 2002 496's came with a forged crank that GM changed over to a newer cast unit in late 2002 that is supposedly is as strong as the forged unit. My advise, don't take any of these cranks above 575HP in a 496, our tests support this finding! If you simply wan't more power from any 496 call us or visit our website. You can bolt on our parts and with truck 496's you will have more power than stock Merc 496's. We also have a some forged cranks, crossovers, marine pans, etc. You can easily set up some nice 525HP 496's for any boat without denting your wallet.

Good Luck

Hi Ray, well as you know Paul Pfaff is building my motor, and I did convince him to try your heads cam and few other components, with 5 pound Procharger I’m dynoing 700 H.P and the only stock thing on the motor is the Cast Crank, can you please tell me what you me ??? ( don't take any of these cranks above 575HP in a 496, our tests support this finding ) my boats still @ Paul Pfaffs place and you got me worried at this point, plus after my valve spring snapping in 1/2 @ 2000 R.P.M which I assume you and Paul did come to an agreement who's paying for what...
Thanks

Both the Merc 496's and GM truck 496 have hypereutectic pistons. They are better than standard cast pistons but not as durable as forged.
