Slick 50 TRS Drives

I bought a Cigarette 31 454's with TRS Drives. The previous owner told me he has been putting Slick 50 in the TRS Drives as lube for the last 7 years. Has anyone ever heard of this? Would you continue or swith to some other lubricant?? Thanks

About 10 years ago Hot Boat mag did a test of all the popular oil additives at the time.

The results proved that adding Slick 50 actually reduced lubrication properties. All the oils tested performed better on their own.

I'd run nothing but Merc Hi Perf gear lube.

Re: Slick 50 TRS Drives

Slick 50 in a gearbox application pretty much doesn't do anything. Not anything good. Not anything bad.

In a motor application, though, it actually can do bad things. Such as build up a plasticky coating on anything exposed to extreme temps (old style turbo bearings in particular). Can also settle in rubber seals and combine with other crap to starve the sealing lip of oil, causing premature wear of the seal.

I'm confident your drives weren't hurt.
But I see no reason to consider using it yourself.
