496HO Plastic Top Shroud Question:
I have seen a few pictures of shrouds cut back like this picture below.
Does someone out there KNOW that this is getting more air flow into the Flame Arrestor, or is this just some idea someone had, and everyone followed suit? I have even seen a few folks add the 500EFI K&N Flame Arrestor to this engine, but Raylar and Whipple both stated the factory flame arrestor flows the most air.

Syd, I always thought the cut-outs you sometimes see are simply to allow the hatch to close properly in a tight-fit compartment. I have virtually no space at all between the underside/front of my sun-pad and the intake on my 496HO. I can't even close the hatch with the plastic shroud, so I leave it off (engine looks better that way anyway). I was very worried that the engine wouldn't breathe, but it does perfectly. Runs the same whether the sunpad is closed tight or raised up two inches to let air stream in there. The Merc engineers seem to have got it right on the design of the intake.
