stripping powdercoat?
need ideas......paint stripper is useless......air grinder is loud/messy/and takes a long time to get through and lots of grinding disks.......any ideas? :)
|
Re: stripping powdercoat?
Really simple. Get a quart or more of clear PVC primer and a new gallon container, soak parts for several hours or overnight. Stuff usually falls off the part!
|
Re: stripping powdercoat?
I soaked my rails and grab handles in acetone. In less than a minute, the P/Cing peeled off in sheets. I think it may also depend type/brand/ quality of the P/Cing itself that will work. Mine were all the Fountain factory parts.
After soaked and peeled |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
How about Anodizing? Is ther an easy way to strip it? I have 256 weiand i would like ot polish?
|
Re: stripping powdercoat?
Anodizing is stripped in a caustic solution.A Job Shop that does anodizing should also offer stripping. We have a Hard Coat Anodize system at work, but it is for production only.

Re: stripping powdercoat?
I think that certain brake cleaners will take off powder coat as well. ;)
Annodizing can be taken off with oven cleaner. Apply and let it soak. For some parts it might take several applications. You're going to want to polish or re-coat it afterward as it will be dull and ugly when you get done with it. |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
We soak the parts in carburetor cleaner. After a couple of hours just hose it off.

Re: stripping powdercoat?
thanks i will try some of these ideas out and let ya know :D

Re: stripping powdercoat?
I've found that all you need is a little chip in the powdercoating and then get it near salt water and the coating will peel off in sheets(at least on aluminum parts) :D :D :D
Seriously, If you are planning on polishing then I would try one of the chemicals posted above to remove it, but if you are going to be recoating with something I would sandblast to remove the old coating, it will leave some "tooth" for the new coating to adhere to. Caleb |

Re: stripping powdercoat?
Just got back from the marina............
Stripped a set of Keith Eickert flame arrestors with aircraft paint stripper made by Klean Strip. Brush it on and let it do its thing. The powdercoat will wrinkle up and all you have to do is use a plastic scraper to clean off. |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
I have a swim platform and tried almost all suggestions and didnt even phase mine. Where would I find aircraft paint stripper?

Black Magnum Black Lightning It's all the same thing. A sandblasting media that's a coal derivative . Auto body shops to heavy industry uses it to strip paint, rust ,etc. Hell of a lot more aggressive than sand. |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
i gets a new learn every day  i 've been in the collision biz 15 yrs. never heard of it .

Re: stripping powdercoat?
Since I am very experienced with having (sold ) a Powder Coat company I can tell you it is very true some are much easier to strip than others. Reason is that there are Polyesters, Epoxies and mixes in the middle called hybrids.
Anyway, the best way which I still use is sending it out and having it chemically done. Not expensive and is perfect. Call around to some Coating companies and ask them who they use to strip their bad parts and racks used for hanging parts. Or maybe they know of a company that strips chemically. Many use ovens to burn it off which is fine for any steel part. But aluminum requires chemicals. Blasting is very time consuming and generally not worth it. hope this helps. |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
i don't claim to be a know it all ,i know that "aircraft stripper " will not work though , sand would be the next option in my book. for a solid color anyway. :sorry:

Pictures of the powder coated KE flame arrestors stripped with Aircraft Stripper.
The top coat bubbles off pretty easy. Scrapes off with a plastic scraper. Some spots had to be gone over with Scotchbrite. You may have to take another pass with the stripper to get the metal completely clean. I'm not saying it's an easy job but I got the end result that I wanted. |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
Wally,
Are you working on the drive? I know the PC on my Dana tabs, just fell off in water. Left a nice alluminum shine to it!! Of course not all of it has come off.. hoping to do more boating so it will all come off and I can paint.. Dick |

Lots of work strippin' the stuff. I'm getting them painted a candy raspberry along with valve covers, power steering pumps, alternators, pulleys, battery boxes and hatch actuators. The engine will be painted diamond pearl. I'm really supprised that you never heard of Black Beauty. I know that you have to look for it but some hardware stores supply it. It's a fine coal dust and is very aggressive. My last trailer was blasted down to the metal with BB. And YES I do own a sandblaster.... :drink: |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
better than a ass blaster :D :D :evilb:

Re: stripping powdercoat?
What i ended up doing after trying a few different methinds was to take my right angle air grinder with the roto-disks and grind off the powder to the metal as best i could...then i sandblasted them clean.....now they are primered with self etching rpimer and waitng for paint.....when ever i decide what color! :)
I tried some different stuff to strip the powdercoating off but nothing worked. I used paint strippers.....saoking it in acetone for a few hours....burning it off....nothing worked...most just made a sloppy mess by softening the powdercoaing is all....thanks for all the suggestions everyone. :) Dick, I'm still not sure what i want to do with that drive....i have that brand new one sitting right next to it that i will most likely install and use.......if i decide to keep this drive then i will eventually have you go through it.. Thanks |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
I have stripped many powder coated parts using spray on gasket remover that can be purchased at Napa . Works great in welded areas that you don't want to grind on . :drink:
|
Re: stripping powdercoat?
I think as stated earlier that there must be different powdercotings out there.
I tried the gasket remover spray and no-luck. Sandblasted and it started to throw sparks when held in one spot still without removing the coating. Oh boy  |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
Last winter I stripped my swim platform (Extreme Marine). I took it to a sandblaster - he just gave it back to me after a few hours. It wouldn't even dent the stuff. I tried Acetone - it wouldn't do anything either. Finally tried the airplane stripper - it was the best. Still wasn't an easy job, but it got done.
As someone else indicated, I think it all depends on the type of powdercoating. |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
My platform is Extreme M. also, where do I find aircraft stripper? Spray on?

Re: stripping powdercoat?
Hey guys,
I too have an Extreme Marine platform that needs to be re-coated or painted... Can I just sandblast and then paint over what ever does not come off? |
Re: stripping powdercoat?
Why not just ask Slingshot, he's been in the business a long time. If he knows how to put it on he probably knows how to take it off.
