Z,

A dominator might give you more hp on top. I had 540's and used the Holley hp950cfm carb. Many thought I should have used the 1050 Dom, but I didn't really feel it was necessary. Actually, I used an hp830 carb, but picked up about 16 more hp from the 950. I now have 565cid engines and will still use the 950's I have. I believe they will give much better throttle response and I will take that any day over more HP.

Patriyacht, I'm really surprised you can use a 6.5 power valve. I would have expected you to be using 4.5 or 3.5 pv's.

I was preparing to change it to a 4.5 just before my season ended. I ran a 6.5 for a year with the Merlin heads. It idled at 800 and never tried to die when shifting. After switching to the AFR's, I had to open the idle bleeds to about 2.5 turns to get enough fuel to idle. No carb signal I guess. As soon as I cracked the throttle the engines would fall on their faces however.

Now is a good time to send your carb to Dean. Might take a week. If you wait until spring like everyone else, maybe 3 weeks.

I have a pair of 540's with GM ported iron heads, 9.75 to 1 CR, and a big cam. Nickerson did the dominators in about 2 weeks. 92 on all corners. I don't know what power valve he put them. They idle great and very little soot on the transom. Peak HP is around 5800 RMP.

Send them to Dean with as much information about your setup as possible. You will be completely satisfied with their performance.
