Air actuated silent choice
I'm changing from electric to Pnuematic silent choice. Who makes the expolsion proof pumps (compressors). Frankly there does not look like much difference between the high dollar marine one and the cheap tire inflator that you can buy at Walmart.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. |
Re: Air actuated silent choice
Dude what happened to the switchable muffflers?
|
Re: Air actuated silent choice
Why are you changing? I just removed my Merc silent choice because it was a PIA. My friend has Corsa with the electric selonoids and never a problem.

Re: Air actuated silent choice
The cheapy should work as far as the compressor itself, not accounting for the spark factor. Course could alway mount it elsewhere, but you will need to install a pressure relief valve, and a solenoid to vent the lines for switching.

Re: Air actuated silent choice
Usually they get switched FROM the air to the Corsa-style electric.
Good luck on the prototype. |
Re: Air actuated silent choice
Had electric on my donzi as well, never a problem.

Re: Air actuated silent choice
look at the ones from viar, have had trouble with the ones from aim on truck apps. Parker also makes a compressor as well.

Re: Air actuated silent choice
Who make the electric style ones? Where did you get them?
Thanks. |

BTW, Here they are after one season....a little dirty but they cleaned right up.

Re: Air actuated silent choice
I have a complete deluxe pnumatic kit from CMI that I never used. I adapted my Corsa solinoids to work with the CMI diverters. It includes the pump relief valve and wiring harness I think. Think I paid around $400 for the kit but I will let it go for less. Ill have to dig for it so let me know if you want it.

Re: Air actuated silent choice
Thanks guys. By what you said I'd be interested in the solenoid style. Anyone know what type and make they are?

Corsa makes the system I have. Its been bullet proof. I was so glad to get away from the air system with all the leaks.
Here's a couple of pics of the Corsa solinoids on the brackets I made to adapt them to work with the CMI system. |

Re: Air actuated silent choice
Had the Merc air on my last boat w/o any problem. Have the electric Corsa on my current one, nonproblem with it either, but it operates so much faster, and with less parts.
As far as the explosion factor using a cheapy air pump, who says you gotta mount it in the engine compartment? The plastic tubing is like $.05 a foot. Mount it elswhere. |

I Had Gaffrigs On My 33 Daytona And Had No Problems, They Would Bleed Off A Little Some Time But Were Very Reliable.

I believe it's Thomas industries.
The compressor is the same as used on Air Shocks in cars and trucks. We parted out a custom made 1983 760 Volvo limosine about 10 years ago that happened to have a similar compressor, just bigger. I am looking for some parts to rebuild some of the units. In the past I have taken mine apart and trimmed the flap down a little so it doesn't dig in to the pipe, at least in the same spot ! I guess I will have to take some apart to figure out bearing and seal dimensions and or numbers. I believe the housings were cast by Wilcox Crittenden and were anodized. My friend has been cleaning me out of parts. His get stuck and he hit's actuator arm with a hammer and sometimes breaks them. (2 motors 4 problems !) I would like to not have to weld or fabricate if I could just buy the small parts. I'm going to rebuild 4 of my diverters for him over the winter to replace his. And then rebuild his. |
