Cool Need Advice on Raw Water System

As I have posted before I am upgrading power on my 97 27' Daytona. The motors, twin 454 mag carbs are out and I feel better about pulling them because I had loose bolts in the motor mount. And as goes with that a coupler that had maybe one more outing on it.
But as for my questions, I know I will need to change to a through hull pickups as my bravos do not have low water pickups and I have already toasted 2 impellers from the standard pickups being above the running surface. What kind, brand of water pickups has everyone had the best luck with? What is the best value in a smaller size sea strainer as I have little room? What should I do with the water outlet in the transom assembly? Should I block off or put a through hull water outlet on the transom and let the water pass through the drive to help with cooling? What can I do to give me and easy way to start on the trailer(water supply.) Any helpful advice will be appreciated. The budget is about to be broken. Thanks, Eric

I'm going to jump around alittle so bear with me here. You can let the water come through the drive to cool it. Do this by removing the water transfer hose all together and buying a block off plate for the inside of the transom. Alot of different people sell these. As for a small sea strainer, a few different people sell these as well. IMCO, Stainless Marine, etc... Usually polished stainless with lids and removable strainer baskets. The transom pickups that we use are generally from Stainless Marine. You can get them in singles or duals. I prefur the single stainless myself. As far as the flush, do like Cigarette does it. Mount a piece of aluminum or nylon to the gunnel or bulk head, in this are 2 water attatchment fittings for your garden hose. Make sure you buy 2 pressure valves to install so if the caps fall off they dont suck air and burn up the impellers. From there you run 2 hoses down to either a "T" fitting in the incoming water hose or to a fitting in the sea strainer. Hook up the garden hose, turn on the water, start the engine and let it idle as usual and fualla. You are done on the lift. Keep in mind that once you install transom water pick ups you may have to cut them down alittle to decrease water pressure. Usually the is to much if they are not cut.

If you need anymore help understanding this or need parts to do, feel free to give me a call at the shop. All the #'s are below.

How about a low water pick up nose cone. Fill the side water pick ups.

How much problem is installing the nose cone? Is this a reliable way to do this. This may be a solution that may help with speed too. What are some other opinions. If I install a pressure relief valve, do I practically need a water pressure guage? Can I not assume if temps are low, that I have enough pressure and if I get too much pressure, then the valve will take care of it. Thanks for the reply. Eric

It's not that hard to install, there's a lot of shops out there that can do it. It was the only option before low water pick up housings. It's easier than some of the other options, you could buy new low water housings. The boat may handle better with the nose cones.

Take a look at using Perko or Groko sea stariners and the ThuroFlush fitting -- http://www.thoroflush.com/ . With these you can flush engine, winterize, backflush strainer and pickup.

They "ain't purty" but they are bullet-proof and time proven in boats/yachts/ships to all international safety standards.

I used them on main engines, genset and a/c raw water systems and made a manifold with a brass part from ACE hardware that hooked all 4 strainer hoses to a single shore hose. I can run engines, a/c and genset , prime pumps, add anitfreeze, backflush etc on work rack or in water. Really helps when boat's in dry stoarge and systems loose prime from water draining out.

Any one got an opinion on the need for a water pressure guage if I use a pressure releif valve? Poorche, that mechanically looks good, but even with paint, I would hate myself in the morning. Anyone use the Teague stainers?
