Whipple charger on 525EFI

Hey Guys:

Anyone install a Whipple Charger on a 525 EFI? If so, what are your comments? How about price? Where can I get it? Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Whipple charger on 525EFI

I have not personally installed one on a 525 but I have done several others. You will end with around 750 HP and will gain around 10-15 mph. Call Whipple direct at 559-442-1261.

Ask for Dustin and tell him you're an OSO member.

PM me I'll give you the number of a guy that did it this summer locally. He's talked to three or four guys from here about it already.

Re: Whipple charger on 525EFI

I have heard that there is an overheating issue with supercharging the 525's due to the closed cooling system.

I would ck with Mark with Precision Marine 504-469-7463.

I know he has been playing around with the 525's :D

Ron,
When the time comes, I can hook you up, or, we can trade motors and I'll whipple the 525 for my Pantera:)

Did you buy VB's boat? If so, what did that have in it for power?

Re: Whipple charger on 525EFI

Well I talked to Mr. Whipple himself because I have a 525 efi and I am looking for options to get around 750 HP for my boat. I asked him about the heating issue and he said it isn't a problem with the whipple install. I had called a vortech dealer and the vortech factory said they wouldn't recommend using their product on 525's because of the closed cooling.

I have to admit, in the past I have always thought the procharger technology made better sense because it is easier on your drives, but after looking at pics of the whipple symstem on a 525 I don't know how anyone could come up with a better looking package. Man that is beautiful. It's looks like something stock from the Merc factory.

http://www.whipplesuperchargers.com/...sp?ProdID=1180

Does anyone have any feedback on whipple/525 efi install? Did they go with a bigger heat exchanger?

I'm looking for opinions here, I have a set of brand new 525 efi's but want to put 700 - 750 HP in my boat. Would you whipple them or just have a set of engines built for that purpose? One thing I do know is that I dont want to have to adjust valves so I"m going with hydraulic lifters.

Re: Whipple charger on 525EFI

Hey Strip:

I haven't contacted anyone yet..just gathering information and waiting for my warranty to expire. However, from what I'm hearing, it seems as though there are some major changes to the engine. being a greenhorn about all this stuff makes we want to wait until they have things perfected.

For now, I'm going to play with a few props to get optimum performance on the stock engine. However, my Pantera with the 525 needs more power to get it up around the 80 mark. I feel the boat runs the best in the high 70's low 80's.

Thanks for all the information.

Thanks Monstaaa

Re: Whipple charger on 525EFI

Any time you make more HP you build more heat. If you do install a supercharger and you have trouble with the motor running hot, just have to buy a big HP closed cooling unit used on innovation motors that will fit in the same location and are priced very reasonable. Roughly $1000 new. I wouldn't let the overheating issue be a factor with your supercharger decision.

absolutely, you replace the entire management system as a whole. The new unit is a complete package from fuel system to ignition system , etc,,,,,,. evidently mercury has of yet not released the rights to mess with or improve the 525 ecu to the after market world. how ever keep watch 525 guys for theres a couple of companys that sprung some big woo for those rite's.hhhhmmmmmmm hhhmmmmmmmmm, arizona is one.

Re: Whipple charger on 525EFI

Whosnext:

I'm seeing close to 70 with around 1/4 of a tank and two people. Spinning a 24 Bravo 4 blade. I have a 26 which I labbed and haven't tried it yet. Maybe this week. The Pantera carries a 140 gallon tank.

Monstaaa:

I'm sure once Mercury releases the rights i'd feel a lot better. In addition, I wonder if I got that SC5000 unit now, would I have to change it later?

It probably is a bit too early for a greenhorn to take the plunge and add a turbo to the package. I'm going to call some of the suggestions in this thread and get more feedback. I really appreciate everyone's help.

Thanks

Ron

I am [hearing] there not running hot w/the stock heat exchangers.

I guess you could change the thermostat if they don't already do that or leave it out.And calibrate for it.

I am betting with the new 525 efi kit[screw size] with about 7 1/2 psi it will be around 800hp :drink:

No Way Ron! After all you went through to get that baby?

Ron,
My suggestion to you for more power is to buy another new complete engine package. Then sell off your 525 or keep it as a spare.
The 525 is a great engine package left alone; to strip it down for just the long block sounds like a waist to me.
There are lots of N/A 540, 572, 598 cube engine packages that will make 650 to 750HP vary reliably.
Good Luck Ron!

Hey Ron,
By the way, we were still boating this past weekend up here in CT. 62° and Sunny on Sunday... :D
I winterized Sunday afternoon though; below freezing temps will be here by Thursday... :(

Ron I installed one on a 525 last summer. The only problem was the stock head bolts were bad they stretched when we were torqueing them. We used a 120 thermostat and I progammed the Mefi 4 ecu controller. The engine made 820 HP and pushed the new 29 Fountain over 96 MPH. Tyler

Pat:

The boat just needs more than a 525. Sits too much in the water. Probably runs best and comfortably at 75-80. I really like the 525, purrs like a kitten. As you know the internal cooled is great for salt water. I believe Merc racing has a 600efi ouit there but don't think it is worth the money for a few more MPH. Don't know what to do. Thinking out loud though.

Regarding LIS, it was great Sunday. I'm taking FT to Florida Friday morning. Hope to get there Saturday and out on the Gulf Sunday if I don't go to St. Pete for the races. What dilemmas!!

Happy Turkey day!

You are in the same pickle I'm in. I LOVE the 525, I just need more power. I have heard nothing good about the whipple kit for it and I can't justify pulling it and building bigger power.

Dave the 29 Fountain I did had a Bravo drive XR 1.50. I can't remember right now what prop I used but it was a 4 blade Bravo that Brett from BBlades done for me. The boat chine walked real bad at 92-94 MPH with a unlabbed 30 Bravo 4 blade. I am buying 3 used Whipple 525 blower kits and I am using 1 maybe two of them let me know if your interested in doing yours.

I have talked with several people who have had a whipple installed on the 525efi. I can tell you that it is not a kit to be installed by just anyone. The people that I have spoken with say that when installed with out putting on the dyno machine and reprograming the computer will have problems. After speaking with Tyler Crockett he would be the only one I would let do this set up.
