STORMRIDER,
I very much appreciate your thread / post illustrating your engine rebuild.
An engine looks so nice when its all cleaned up. If I may ask, how many hours did your engine have before you deceided to rebuild? Are the pistons forged or hypereutectic?
Thanks much for your time and post. Keep the pic's coming.

The pistons are speed pro 2399 forged. His motor probably had over 400 hours on it.

Re: 454mag rebuild in progress

The engine was 1989 mark IV.
It was put in the boat before I got it, so I'd go w/ JC on the hours.
Jeff did a great job cleaning up the block, crank and con rods.
I should have more pics by the end of the week.

Re: 454mag rebuild in progress

I have a similar engine 468" 731 cam same heads Dart Single Plane with a 750 Holley, and Eddie Marine Exhaust. I have asked in the past about my carb and I have been told 750 is adequate. I may be replacing it. I see you are going to run an 850. See big for this size engine, but I don't know that much. My question here for anyone that knows anything about engines, should I replace with a 750 or an 800. I have great throtle response, and the engine pulls great. It currently pulls about 5,300. Looks like the cam you are using has more duration than the Crane 731. Thanks

Re: 454mag rebuild in progress

I am running an 800 on my mild roller 454 and it still does fine on the low end. Even with my Dart single plane. Your 750 would be right on a car but I feel on a boat you need the 800 for the top end. May not help but I doubt it will hurt.

Must have had to cut a lot off those heads to get 9.5-1 with 2399's. I didnt think it was possible unless you angle cut it. But maybe not if you dont bore notch it and dont unshroud the valves in the combustion chamber. I do that and it adds up to a lot of area when your done.

Re: 454mag rebuild in progress

I think 40mils are coming off the heads.

Got the chamber down to a 114.Block was decked so that the piston is in the hole .010.I am using a .030 cometic gasket.9.4 to 1 is the final compression.

Any updates??

Re: 454mag rebuild in progress

Waiting on a head gasket to come in. It's .030 so it had to be ordered.
Should have come in on friday.
But the short block is together... crank, cam, pistons & rods, timing chain, etc.
The heads should be on by monday/tuesday and painted right after that.
I'll go back to the shop mid week.

Jonh, hows the repower coming along?

Hey Storm,
Is that a stock GM 454/502HO intake I see?
I've been trying to off load one for $50.
Anyone want it?

Stormrider 03-11-2005 10:26 AM

Re: 454mag rebuild in progress

Pat, not that i know of.
Its bonze lined and completely ported by Rich Zul.

Pat McPherson 03-11-2005 10:47 AM

Re: 454mag rebuild in progress

OK, brass lined and ported, but basically the same intake...
I guess that GM stuff is not half bad... :drink:

Re: 454mag rebuild in progress

In Dennis Moore's book, he states the chevy intake is the best design, and all aftermarkets copy it.
But we will try out different intakes and carbs when its on the dyno.

Not at all. I just read it to learn about marine engines, not to build one. And to understand what Jeff is telling me.

I am very interrested in reviewing your dyno results. I am rebuilding my 454's too. 9.7 CR, Canfield aluminum heads, roller cam, roller rockers... I would love to see your dyno results, because we are shooting for 500 + hp at 5400 RPM.

Re: 454mag rebuild in progress

Dyno coming soon.
Thing is, after I dyno, the engine is going into the boat.
And I prefer not to have the engine out in the cold snow.
So... dyno will be probably in 2 weeks.
Plus I still have some riggin in the boat to do.

That other motor is a Ford with a Danny Bee belt drive.Looks like a C and C Motor sports Al block.Probably will have a C-460 or Blue thunder heads?

Storm, looks great I'll have to post some of my 454 mag rebuild. Question where did you get the cap for the power steering reservoir? Eric

Eric, if you mean this... its IMCO.
You should be able to read the cap if you open the pic.
