Sheet Metal Intake!
Anyone using a sheet metal intake manifold on their motor? I would like to talk to a manufacturer of these. Anyone have any some info on a reputable manufacturer? They look cool and I believe they can be custom made for a particular application for some extra HP!
Thanks, Craig |
Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
hmm will these intakes get me chicks???????? :D :D :D :D

Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
Hell ya!! What you doing home at 10:45 on Saturday night? You up for another trip to Hardy this coming summer? You need to take a ride on the new WETTE VETTE. I think you might like it!
Later! |
Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
its saturday night, what else would i be doing.. surfin oso. Wishin I had the funds to be up sledding this weekend :( pretty much depressed and poutin :(
Would be nice to go to hardy again. I'll probably be up for it ;) I would love a ride in the wette vette :D |

Thanks, Craig really look great. :D |
Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
While I don't have any experience with sheet metal manifolds for marine use, I have used Hogans manifolds for Drag racing before with great success. The only guy I know of that has used them on baots before is Mr. Gadgets. I haven't seen him around as much lately. Maybe he is busy building drives everyday.

Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
I would get a hold of CFE up in MI. Carl's stuff has been the hot ticket for years now. If you need the number let me know. Be ready to shell out around $3500 to $6500 for an intake.

Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
   Wilson is the only one I am familiar with but, that was for drag racing cars.
|
Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
I believe that Hawk 1000 hp's had them. Probably built by Hogan.

Craig,
I have a Hogan's intake on my motor. If you call Tim, he can set it up for what ever you need. Mine works very well at low speeds and I don not have any problems associated with it. I was running a flat tappet cam the past two years and will go back to a roller this year and see if the intake works at 6k rpm. Up to this point, I am not certain what gains I have had from this design of intake. I am running EFI and that was $500 extra. I tried to get a guy in Detroit to make one for me, but when I wanted to see what his manifolds looked like and deliver my heads, he quit talking to me. I left message after message. I guess he did not want me to see anyone elses manifolds, like I care what a pro stocker's intake looks like and would tell the world his secrets. I would go back to Tim Hogan in a minute, and will if I can sell these heads and intake as a set. Then I think I will go to big inches to see if the drives I am building can handle it.. LOL! |

That was my reaction when I opened the box.. couldnt walk for a week. Maybe that was what all the chicks were excited about.. LOL

Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
Derebery Performance Marine has been using them for years. They have a builder in Oklahoma.

Craig,
Did you talk to any of these places yet? |
Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
I didn't have a chance today, I will try tomorrow. Thanks for all of the replies and good info on people to speak to about these. I will probably start with Wilson and see what they have to say. :D

here are some wilson marine intercooled intakes i am havening some built for some big cheif motors

Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
I would contact Carl @ CFE (810) 773-6310, or Keith Wilson (954) 771-6216. Both do great work. Carl's new intakes have billet runners that are CNC'd. This makes them extremely consistant, and very strong. I've used intakes from both, and they are excellent companies to work with. Nothing wrong with HRE, Hogan, Self, or any of the other guys.

Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
Come on Craig, you know you can't be using sheet metal intakes and a worked 1250 Dominator on a 598" boat motor! The real secret is a dual plane and holley 850  Well maybe a 950 since that's probably all the air the "calculator" spits out your motor needs..... :p :p That and a single pattern hydralic roller will give you at least another 30 ft/# of torque at 3000.... you know, right where its needed:D :D

Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
Hughs racing builds probably the best manifolds for specific applicattions. HRE manifolds

Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
Chris,
What would the estimated $$ of that type of system be? What is the drawback, if any on a marine application and at what RPM does the system really pay off? Craig |
Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
Craig,
Welll, around $4 to $4500" when it was all said and done. You wouldn't have to go to the extreme of a a divider pan but you could if you want. The only draw back to a dry sump is cost. After that everything is positve. From idle on up especiall with the big stroke stuff. Bearing life, oil temp, ring seal, everything is improved. The new 07' vette will be a dry sump engine. For the power it will put out and for reliability sakes, it had to be. Chris |
Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
There sure is a lot of cool stuff out there! Those Wilson intercooled sheet metal intakes are very wild looking!! Are those for a Pro charger or other similar type of blower application?
Craig |
Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
The only downside I've ever seen with a dry sump system is physically fitting them into certain locations. Everything else is 100% positive. We've actually gone as far as to move the tank locations to affect the CG.

Rum
If Wette goes with the sheet metal intake, you need sell him a set of of those split King Demons. Nothing looks cooler then 4 x 2 barrels sitting on one of those intakes. Chris |

Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
I spoke with Wilson briefly today and they are supposed to fax me a form to fill out with my engine specs so they can accurately evaluate. In speaking to one engine builder the new Merlin X manifold came up. It isn't as bling as the sheet metal manifold, but is supposed to be designed for larger CI motors and is cast very accurately. The Dart I am running definately has some shortcomings and is 10 yr old technology. He will be dynoing one in the next couple of weeks against the Dart so it will be interesting. I think the sheet metal or tunnel ram type of manifold would still do better and definately looks cooler than a single quad. The question will be how much better? 10 HP-20HP probably isn't worth the cost of the sheet metal manifold, let alone 2 new carbs and the necessary linkage and lines. I will be eagerly awaiting the increases seen (if any) of the Merlin X over the Dart! :D
|
Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
On your size engine going to to a sheet metal and 2 carb set up you will see around 60HP. That is drawing from my feed back from C&C, Al Parker, CFE, BRS, and others that we deal with.
Wette I would suggest monitoring racejunk and other websites. If you were a class racer, then yes by all means, but since it sounds like you want this for "sweet" factor, I would find a used one for cheap coin. Chris |

Re: Sheet Metal Intake!
Actually I saw a sheet metal intake for sale on Racing Junk, which is what got me thinking. It was for a short deck and I don't like messing with spacers so I will keep my eyes open. In the meantime it will be interesting to see how the Merlin X does against the Dart. Like everything there seems to be mixed opinions about how much more there really is with the dual quad vs the single. Some engine builders say mainimal gains and manifold guys say more. I like the cool factor of the sheet metal, but if it doesn't make the boat faster it really makes my motor less impressive in my opinion. I tend to be more impressed by non assuming, normal looking motors that run like raped apes! That really surprises people, particularily blower guys! If there really is 60 HP then the sweet look is also backed up by increased performance.

This is Steve Morris Racing Engines CNC manifolds very cool and very strong. He desinged these for a pair of Procharged 1400 HPs with fuel injection and intercooler system similar to the blue wilson intakes earlier. He can do them for any configuration and what I think is cool is the way he can controll the shape and conture of the port look at the curve and shape, plus it just looks cool.
