Question I'm in need of advice on replacing a cracked 502 MPI 1999.

I'm looking at a boat with a cracked 502 MPI and researching motor prices on the web.

I believe that if I buy a base 502, same generation as what I'm replacing, I should be able to just drop it right in and utilize the current MPI top end on the cracked motor, is this correct?

I've replaced a 454 carb engine before, but never an MPI or messed with an MPI, just want to know of any concerns before I go buying a base block? Any recommendations? How involved is installing the MPI? What to watch out for? Want to do it right the first time.

I've seen new base motors going between $5200 and $5700, any suggestions on best place to look? I'm located in Pennsylvania.

Thanks for your help everyone!

If it's just the block cracked, you could always buy a new block and set it up. Even if you want to keep it stock, that would give you a chance to blue print the bottom end and put it together right.

Brand new bare 502 blocks go for about $1500

Bare Block... that's a thought too!

Has anyone mounted a MPI? Any difficulties or as easy as putting on a regular carb manifold intake?

If the block was damaged due to freezing, I would be very careful about having the cylinder heads, oil coolers, etc. checked for cracks as well. Replacing the block is not that difficult to do. But getting all this work done and then having chocolate milk in the oil due to a cracked head or oil cooler would suck.

Jasper licks. I rebuilt a motor after them and it had 2 different size valve stems in it on the intake side. Just go through it yourself, and have the heads, intake, and exhaust checked for cracks. It's not that expensive. New block, rings, bearings, oil pump, and seals and your back in the game.
