Mark,

My engine builder (Dave Wesseldyk of WESCO) intall the Jesel Sportsman's Series on my engines set up with hydraulic roller cams. He has used them on several engines now without any problems. He only uses the competition style Jesel's on all out racing engines or on very radical cam applications.

Also, from what I could see, Laz Mesa posted a picture showing off a couple of freshly built engines in a thread here recently showing the Jesel Sportsman's Series shaft mount rocker system that he is offering on his marine application engines.

They were HP500's a while ago, but not much is original anymore. They're 509ci at 9.5 CR now. I'm running Pro Topline 320 heads, custom ground cams, Morel lifters, Isky Endurance springs, Jesel rockers, Pro Systems carbs, full MSD ignitions, Aeromotive electric fuel systems. Still have Dart HP500 rect port intakes, port matched to heads.

When are these girdles an absolute necessity?

If you haven't already spent the money on good rockers, studs and guide plates, don't waste the money on stud girdles.
You probably don't need them anyway. Spend the money on shaft rockers, Summit sells Jesel for around $950, T&D are good also. They both fit under stock valve covers. The shaft rockers don't dance around on the valve stem knocking the guides out.

My customers have given alot of postive feedback on the Jesel SS series. If you are starting fresh, then these are not much more then if you bought rockers/girdles/studs/and plates.
