ID'ing my ECM

ID'ing my ECM
Think I fried my ECM the other day on 1 of the motors.
When I 1st turned the key on, the fuel pump would pump up, and the warning buzzer would self test. Now neither. Motor won't start either, obviously do to no fuel pressure.
I swapped ECM's with my other motor and both conditions followed the ECM in question, and the motor that would not start now does. So it is in the ECM.
How do I verify the difference between a 454 and a 502 ECM if I were to locate used? They have different pt #'s.
Also, are mine the MEFI 3's?
And finally, is it possible to change the hrs on a replacement to match mine and how $$.
Thanks

Re: ID'ing my ECM
The MEFI 3 is identical physically, whether on a 454 or a 502. It is the programming that is different. Should you buy another used ECM, send it to Arizona Speed and Marine or (Whipple) and they'll reflash it to factory specs for your engine.
If you can't find a new ECM, I have one available that was a spare for my whippled 502's. (500 efi's).
Good luck,
Steve

Re: ID'ing my ECM
I've got an MEFI-3 from my 2000 7.4 MPI. It's a non-stock program (done by Tyler Crockett) so it's programming is of no use to anyone, but I may be able to grovel a little to get it flashed to your stock program. PM me if your interested.
Also, I think "bobl" also has a few MEFI-3 laying around. It's possible that one of his has programming you could use as-is. Maybe he'll chime in also.

Re: ID'ing my ECM
Thanks guys, I need to find out what it will cost to have one programmed to my motor and now the turn around time, I have no idea what to expect. Mine is difiantly kaput.
So either Tyler Crockett, Whipple or AS&M can do this?
Can these be reprogrammed several times w/o harm?
Bobs are modified too.

Crockett and AS&M both charge $350 to reprogram. On to plan B
Might be best to just buy new at that rate.
Unless I can find a used one that has not been reprogrammed.

Re: ID'ing my ECM
I'll second what Rob said of Mark, very fine mechanic. I think he's in the New Orleans area? As to reflashing, to my knowledge they can be re-programmed any number of times without harm. If you haven't bought one, feel free to e-mail me and I'll send you one at a very favorable price.
