Motor starts but does not Rev. Please help!

The sensor either works or won't work. No in between. I have never seen a advance module go bad. Borrow one from a local Marina. You might want to go by a complete distributor
with the module and coil in it from an auto yard. Try it and see if your problem is solved. If not thats not your problem.

Yes in cars I have replaced several. Heat is usually the cause of failure. If you take the back off of the merc one you will see its totally sealed in silicone, plus it sits out in the open, not on top of a hot intake manifold.

Did you adjust the valve lash/rockers yet????
If that isn't done, its not gonna run worth a chit, if at all. You might even damage the cam and/or lifters if you keep trying to start it.

Gonna look for another distributor to try. I guy called thinks he had one but won't be back in town until tonight to verify.
