Hi Marty,
On a good day with no traffic, I can make Brick from my house in Harwich in just under 5hrs. Thats running in the very early morning hours.
What we have started doing when we head out to go racing is leaving the house 1:30 and 2AM , this allows us to avoid any traffic.
Your biggest challenge in regards to traffic is getting past NYC, after that it's not to bad....except the occasional slow down on Rt.95 in CT!!

Yes, there are Hotels with Beaches that you could watch the race from. There is the Best Western Blue Water Resort or the Surf & Sand both on South Shore Drive.
