Ortley Beach Results?

Hello Race Fans,
What a wild two days! On Thursday everyone had some fun checking out the boats in the pits. We had kiddy rides, dunk the racer tank, a band, Miss New Jersey, food vendors and race boats. Let's just say it was one of the more active dry/wet pits location. The Jersey Shore Marina proved to be the perfect marina to accommodate the crane as well as having a launch ramp and fuel.
Today worked out quite well. We left on time, had a bit of a tough time in the canal as the current was running against us, as we had to maintain headway while staying off plane. I bet that canal took an hour to calm down after we dragged 20 race boats behind 4 pace boats.
We arrived at the Surf Club just before 1PM and after a patriotic American Flag salute to go along with the playing of the National Anthem, the boats went back to the North end of the course to establish the milling area. After a few minute hold for the Coast Guard to clear the backstretch of a fishing boat, we lit the orange smoke flair to signal one minute to go.
We ran one race with all 20 boats, but we started them 10 at a time. The P1, P2 and P3 boats started first, followed a minute later by the P4 and P5 boats.
We had a large P1 field and it was the highlight of the show for the thousands of people that packed the Surf Club. The JEM boat took the immediate lead with Lightning Jacks, Wazzup, Instigator, Traffic Light and Warpaint in tow. JEM lead the field but it was Warpaint that put on a show and ran up through the field to eventually get on JEM's transom. Behind them Traffic Light and Lightning Jacks had the best dual of the day, changing position on every lap, a real dogfight to the end.
On the fifth lap, Warpaint had gone from 100 feet behind JEM to a mile in front of them, clearly something was wrong. Later the official on the northern pace boat confirmed that he saw Warpaint miss turn three. It was a hazy day and the run on the outside leg was 1.5 miles and visibility was about a third of that distance so finding the turn boats created quite a bit of difficulty for most of the teams. JEM went on to take the win. The one disappointment was that the big AMF turbine boat never really made a showing. Something mysterious happened that actually broke their #6 outdrive clean off just about the prop shaft.
1st JEM
2nd Traffic Light
3rd Lightning Jacks
4th Warpaint
5th AMF
In P2, the new Wazzup Super Vee tore up the course and was always near the very front of the pack in the hunt for the overall lead. They ran against Firewater and the newly crowned Fastest Super Vee in the country, Instigator. Instigator set that record at 112mph just last weeks. Firewater blew the center motor, ending their day, but Instigator and Wazzup had a great battle, ending with Wazzup taking the checkered flag.
1st Wazzup Racing Engines
2nd Instigator
3rd Firewater
In P3, it was Rolling Thunder squaring off against a stand in crew in the purple Wazzup entry. The stand in crew of Haggin and Pop Pop had their hands full with Rolling Thunder, a Jaguar Catamaran that has been under wraps for years. It was great to see the old girl out again and add another trophy to their case.
1st Rolling Thunder
2nd Wazzup
P4 Looked like the old days of Factory 1 racing. Typhoon, Lavey Craft and a Superboat all running within a few feet of each other, except this time, they were all chasing after the Godfather in his twin engine Scarab. The Delicate Sound of Thunder had no speed advantage but the weight of the boat allowed it to motor through the slop without loosing time in the air like the smaller boats did. In the end, even after having to hunt for some of the turn markers, the Godfather was able to stay out front and bring the Delicate Sound of Thunder in for the win.
1st Team Nesquik, the Delicate sound of Thunder
2nd Fast Eddie - Superboat
3rd Typhoon - Rules the Seas from third place.
4th LaveyCraft
PAPA DUKES WINS! The youngest kids in offshore racing, running a little 24' Carrera hull have just taken their first win. Congratulations to Team Papa Dukes. And they worked for it. For the first few laps, the little rented Bat Boat lead the P5 fleet, but they broke something, which left Papa Dukes and the P5 - 5 entry to duke it out.
1st - Papa Dukes
2nd - P5-5
3rd - Sonic Boom
4th - Kean College
5th - Nopper
6th - Bat Boat
I hope you all enjoyed yourself today, on the water, on the beach or even on the Internet. That's what OPA racing is all about. Thanks to all of our volunteers that give of their time and energy each year to come out and protect the racers. Its appreciated more than you will ever know.
If you'd like to relive the day, it's pretty simple. Just turn your computer to www.talkoffshore.com and find the file called Jersey Boyz Offshore Grand Prix, the entire broadcast is available for replay. While you listening to Martin Sanborn and Rich Luhrs share their wisdom, open another browser and go to www.njsportpics.com and check out the wonderful photos taken by Jim O'Connor.
From here we're looking forward to our next race in Cambridge Maryland Sept 23rd and 24th. From there were off to Camden NJ in October. As you can imagine, you'll be getting some emails from me about both races.
Also, this race will be featured in Poker Runs America and Extreme Boats Magazine. Look for it in upcoming issues.
See ya at the races,
Ron Polli

Re: Ortley Beach Results?
I would like to congratulate the Team MONOC for winning the Doug Lewis Memorial Good Sportmanship Trophy.
It was a tough decision with so many hard working people around the races.
Finally after so many years of my own racing, I finally got the first hand experience with what all the Medic Teams, Divers and our Angel One Jumpers do prior, during and after the races. They all volunteer their time to be here and away from their families to keep us all safe on the race course.
With so many years passed I couldn't recall when any of these brave men and women, (our 1st responders) have really been recongnized for what they do for our sport here on the Jersey Shore.
Whenever we need them, we can count on them! They are always there for us....
That was the same thing many had with Doug Lewis of Professional Marine Racing. He was always there willing to help.
They certainly well deserved this award!
Congratulations once again and THANK YOU for being there for us all at anytime!

P4 race went a little different than previously mentioned. While the racing was close LAVEYCRAFT, with the smallest motor in the fleet (with the exception of the bat boat), was leading the race for the first two laps. Augie pushed the big NesQuick boat by us on lap 3 and we ran neck and neck for the next 3 laps. We were pushing as hard as we could before we snaped the drive :C Augie GREAT RACE! we'll get you next time.
