OSS Corpus rap up
Mother Nature smiled upon the Offshore Super Series Power Boat Racing Association’s 2nd Annual National Championship. Notorious for its rough riding, the Corpus Christi Bay was uncharacteristically calm for the 30 boats that came to compete.
The race was originally scheduled for Pensacola, however Hurricane Dennis’s devastation made this impossible. The community of Corpus Christi soon opened its doors to the OSS competition. Within eight weeks, the new location produced a race that would make any venue jealous.
In the OSS Cat Outboards, first place went to #67 Loan Shark with Marc Granet and Dan Lawrence. They were working until 11 pm Saturday night getting the engines ready and it really paid off. Both #9 Mojo with Stan Perkoski and Grant Bruggeman and #18 Bermuda BerryCuda with Chris Marshall and Dennis Berry experienced engine trouble. #18 Bermuda BerryCuda Came in second and #9 Mojo took third.
In the OSS Vee Lite category, #4 Genpro/Wild Card with Wil Ros and Larry Fontecha took an early lead. #83 Screamin’ Eagle, with Matt Jones and Allen Campbell came in second, #47 Team IMCO with Matt Reed and George Auriemma, came in third. Both put on a great show, it was a cat and mouse game almost the entire race.
In their second race with OSS, the Extreme Class featured two boats in the running, #21 DF Young with Herb Stotler and Rich Wyatt, and #1 Bacardi Silver, with David Scott and John Tomlinson. Early in the race, #21 DF Young lost control and drifted wide and almost collided with #1 Bacardi Silver. #1 Bacardi Silver corrected in time to avoid the crash. #1 Bacardi Silver won giving John Tomlinson his 100th win in offshore racing. #21 DF Young took second.
In OSS Vee Class, #22 Instigator/Miccosukee with Brett Furshman and Joseph Sgro, who are new to the Offshore Super Series, came in first. #88 Fury with Steve Delaney and Ray Delaney took second place. #99 The Switch, with Curt Watkins and Rick Turmel came in third. Points leader #8 Spiderman suffered engine problems and broke during the race.
In the OSS Cat category, the battle was fierce with #5 WHM Motorsports, with Billy Mauff and Jay Muller, who lead the race for the first nine laps. They took second after a long battle with Team CRC. #84 Popeye, with Dominic Visconsi, Jr. and Jim Dyke came in third after running in second for the first half of the race. The three teams took turns in the three positions the entire race, with #7 Team CRC, with Mike DeFrees and Jeff Harris coming in first.
Competition was exciting in the OSS Cat Lite Category. #31 Page Motorsports, with Steve Page and Joey Gratton, took an early lead over the incoming favorites, #00 Motley Crew. The upset seemed certain, when in the 8th lap, #31 Page Motorsports rolled and took the team out of the race. Both driver and throttleman received minor injuries. They were treated and released from a local hospital. When racing continued, it was the Roman Brothers from New Jersey, Scott and Ron, who took first. #60 Ettore Squeegees, with John Talley and Paul Whittier came in second. #13 Popeye’s Famous Chicken and Biscuits, with Stan Ware and David Wade came in third.
Be sure to catch the action of the Corpus Christi race again on the Outdoor Channel’s “Speed Zone” on Saturday, November 19th at 5:00 pm and then again on Friday, November 25th at 6:00 am.
