What is the wildest things you have seen on the race course?
Being on the side of Buckshot in Point Pleasant when the boat broke in half in the air was a snapshot in my mind that just wont go away.

This year Key West. Going into the harbor, Callan goes between Scream machine and us trying to beat us to the turn. We all got there at the same time. Callan turns left 20 ft in front of us, hooks goes up in the air, the hatches fly off and go over our boat, does a complete flip, lands rightside up 1ft off our bow. Cleaned out my shorts, and proceeded to turn one. Wildest thing I have ever seen. Smitty

This is from Dave Callan: It will be in next month's EBM with photos of the flip from Mamma Wazzup.
Tell Smitty I'm sorry we got him wet and am sure glad nobody got hurt. We came up on Smitty and Scream Machine just before entering the harbor turn. They were next to each other but separated to the point that the safest pass seemed to be between them. The entry to this turn is constricted by a large round concrete structure in front of the Pier House Hotel. John lifted and then got back into it as it seemed we could potentially be three wide in the corner. These judgments are tricky with the speed differences of the boats. Obviously, we were running much faster than the smaller boats. We entered the corner at about 130mph. The boat set then began to want to hook (not unusual). I applied opposite rudder pressure but could not correct it. The rear began to slide and we caught a chine (causing the tsunami) and high sided into an airborne 360 barrel roll. We hit square on the starboard side (stopping the rotation) and landed on the bottom. The cockpit video indicated 117mph when we were upside down. Interestingly, in the on board video frame that we are upside down there is an error message saying "acquiring satellite lost signal". The impact was surprisingly soft as the diagonal structural arrangement transmits the energy from the impact forward and aft unlike a transverse arrangement sending all the energy in the crew's direction. Structural damage was minimal. Some honeycomb crushed but the inside skins are all intact as were all structural members. We would have raced Sunday but we damaged the rudder assembly beyond repair. We put a new higher performance rudder on the boat in KW as the original rudder was flexing in turns too much. It is possible that the rudder failed and contributed to the roll. The rudder itself was severely bent and one of the plates that the rudder mounts between cracked completely in half. Our entry speed was hot for the line we had to take but I remain surprised we rolled and am thankful there were no injuries.
