Re: SOB class.

Mike,

We tried to accomodate the SOBs over the last two years in one of two ways.

1. If enough show up, they can have thier own race with no breakout speed. These boats claim to run up to 90mph+ in the right conditions and they don't really want to race against offshore style boats. How many is enough???? Probably 5 or more. Will they get to share the purse? Ask Smitty.

2. If less than 5 show up, they can race in P5 or P4 depending up how fast they can run, just like any other boat. In this case, they would share the purse just like any other P5 or P4 boat.

So far, one SOB showed in Cambridge and two showed up in Camden. Both times they ran in P5 and didn't run up front. Lets see who shows up this year. Are you building one?

Re: SOB class.

I have video of the 2 guys that showed up in Camden. Its true they didn't win but from the video no one had more fun then them! They may be capable of 90 plus but not if they get in the wash of the other boats. They are a case of a boat being able to do 90 but belong in P5. Its the same as a 28 Skater thats capable of 110 and is supposed to run in P2. Some boats should have there own class, but if there is not enough of them they have to race where the rules put them.
Come on you SOB's you are the best to watch!!!

i have an action marine which i might be selling but i'm in market for a 24 ft monza/ pantera/ manta and i was thinking if there was going to be a sob class i would rigg it with an outboard when i finally find the boat i want. but if the speeds are going to be unlimited on the sob then the kind of boat i'm looking for won't kleep up with those that where at camden this past year. my action would keep up with them any day but i want to step up to an offshore boat. i thought the sob class was going to be like it use to be in the early 90's and early-late 80's which was like 22 -24 ft offshore boat not lake and river boats. thanks for clearing it up for me Ron

How cool is this??? This is the SOB class overseas. All with either 150 or 225 Honda four stroke engines. One hull for each engine. Plus they look like they belong in the ocean.

Re: SOB class.

Would be really kool to get one of those over here. Ron any idea what the change over from European moey to Amreican money is??? On the one website I visited you could get one of those ready to go for just over 20,000. European currency. Maybe Tom Abrams could find out being Steve Curtis's company builds them.

$24,222 give or take a Euro.

Wonder what it would cost to get them shipped here. That would probably be the best format to get into the SOB class. Don't you think.

Recently while in Ireland, Honda had a real cool commercial showing this type of boat, pretty cool stuff.

The Honda Four Stroke Series has grown to about 40 boats in two classes since its inception a few years ago...and they anticipate even bigger fleets in 2006!Sure looks like fun.

Run an Ocke Mannerfelt B23 with a stock 2.5 and you'll run 103 in the light chop and 85-88 in 3 footers all day long. Trust me, this boat will smoke, and I mean lap, any single engine Progression, Activator, Velocity or Superboat you send it's way with ease, while having a conversation with your co-pilot about the after party. 28 Skaters can't catch this boat in 3 footers.

Herb "Intimidator Racing" did very well with his boat. And he was out front!

Herb crossed the Starting Line 6 seconds before Grumpy Old Men, therefore leading them by 6 seconds while holding second place in the class.

1 lap down, Grumpy is right next to Intimidator making up the 6 seconds.
2nd lap Grumpy pulled 14 seconds over Intimidator
3rd lap Grumpy pulled 2 seconds more making it a 16 second lead over him
4th lap Grumpy doubled it to a 32 second lead over them.
5th lap Intimidator gave up 4 more seconds
6th & 7th laps Intimidator throttled back, trailing by 1 minute & 6 seconds to Grumpy.

Some would say the numbers may not be accurate, but from what I can tell even after Intimidator pulling back on the throttles for the last 2 laps his total time was 31 minutes 16 seconds to complete 31.5 miles. Grumpy 28 minutes 34 seconds.
Intimidator's average speed was right where it needed to be in order to be competitive in P-5.
The other 21 SOB with less power followed with what was to be expected, about a 10 mph less than the other boats. No one expected him to be in front, but Herb held is own for as long as he thought he needed and by watching his GPS unit, he was on the edge of breaking out, which was one thing he did not want to do as he did in Cambridge.

Funny thing is imagine how pissed off Mercury would get if that form of racing came here. They didn't like the Vortec program to much so I can only imagine there take on this.

They can double their exposure here in the USA!

Hey Ron P,
I will find out what I can at the weekend.
Friday evening, Barbara and I are flying to London to have saturday lunch with the Commodore of the Royal Motor Yacht Club (Poole) and flying back sunday.
They have the Harmsworth trophy and my mate Sean (Lord Normanton) is the trophy custodian.
Both these guys will know what they are all about because they do a lot of offshore racing out of the Poole club.
I will give your regards to my other mate,Phil (below)when I see him again.

I think Steve Curtis runs the class overseas.

Re: SOB class.

Thanks Ken, please see what you can find out. Those hulls really look like the right type of vessel for the conditions. Please try to find out what sort of support Honda gives to the class.

I also sent an email to Honda looking for some info.

I do know that APBA LLC had discussions with them a few years ago, so who knows what their appetite is for racing in the US. Hopefully they'll be responsive.

See ya soon in Crescent City.
Ron

Very cool boats but you wont get one with a motor for 24K,

As for shipping containers cost around $5000 to ship full or empty.

Does anyone know how much the boat minus motor would be, and what size is the motor??
I would certainly entertain running one, and maybe with Mercury power!!!
