New, old 7 Mile Bridges to be part of Grand Prix race
Associated Press
MARATHON, Fla. - Organizers of this weekend's Marathon Super Boat Grand Prix in the Florida Keys intend to incorporate both the old and new Seven Mile Bridges in the race course, despite initial objections from the U.S. Coast Guard and Florida Department of Transportation.
Those agencies were concerned that "if a boat hit the new bridge it would knock it out of service, especially so close to the beginning of hurricane season," said John Carbonell, president of Super Boat International Productions, the event's producer.
But Carbonell argued in the unlikely event a boat hit the bridge the damage would be to the boat - not the bridge. He and other race organizers also agreed to install large ship mooring fenders to help protect bridge piers if there is an accident.
"What Marathon has that no other race venue has is the boats going under those bridges," said Carbonell, adding that Marathon offshore powerboat racing courses have incorporated the spans since 1986 without incident. "That's what makes the Marathon race so exciting."
Carbonell anticipates 30-35 boats will participate with 1 p.m. start times each day, Saturday and Sunday.

The results and pictures will probably be posted after everyone gets done with the best bar-b-q yet.
Frank/Pops/Jim Bull were the chefs this week and we're all being treated for smoke inhalation.
No incidents....safe race, and more than one racer said to me tonight "we had fun today.......it was great out there".
So we're going to do it again tomorrow.
