Default Class 1 Crash

Powerboat racers in crash drama

Chris Parsonage and James Sheppard escaped uninjured
A powerboat crew have survived a 135mph crash in front of thousands of spectators in Plymouth.

Chris Parsonage's challenge in the British Grand Prix ended dramatically in front of his home crowd.

Parsonage and his fellow driver James Sheppard escaped uninjured after their boat King of Shaves rolled over.

It is the sixth year the World Powerboat Championship has been held in Plymouth, attracting a crowd of thousands of spectators.

The restarted race, the fifth of the season, was won by Victory 77.

The British Grand Prix is the fifth race of the season after rounds in Qatar, Spain and Norway.

The King of Shaves now lies ninth out of 10 teams in the league table, headed by reigning champions Spirit of Norway, crewed by Bjorn Rune Gjelsten and Steve Curtis.

Speaking after the crash Mr Parsonage, a property developer, said: "We were pushing hard and lying in second, we came in hard and thought we had a chance to get in front.

"But as we turned back out the wash kicked the boat sideways and that was it - we barrel rolled it."

Canopy looks intact.

I'll email Chris today for pictures of the canopy structure... what worked what didn't.

Were installing the new lindner 3/4 Windscreen on the Platinum Princess as we speak.
It willl be a "floating design" with the outer bra.

I'm most interested in the structure of the rest of the canopy on KOS.

I'll post whatever I find out.

The crash made Fox New's "around the world in 80 seconds" (it's on the website), they showed the onboard footage as well.

There is no side support for the side of the hull. The bulkheads are J shaped and offer nothing to a side impact. Did the canopy lens pop out?

If you go to www.class-1.com you can see the top hatch appear to open as the boat flexes.

This is something we (AMF) are trying to come up with a solution for. It could be we need a latch that locking into canopy support beams on three points.

No question about it. Well have a solution to the problem in short order.

Imagine 3 pins simtaniously locking the perimeter of the hatch down. these pins turn the (Heavy Duty) canopy into part of the top structure. On the Hinge side . heavy duty double release hinges.
