He was the best dog I ever had in my 53 years. About 8 months ago when I got back home from New Mexico I opened the door of the house to find a stinky smell of burnt food and noticed my oldest son had been attempting to cook beneits, (fried biscuits with powdered sugar) and the whole house reeked and I started fussing at him (son) and did not do my normal wrestle with my dog routine that I always do when gone for a while , with Bacchus. I guess he got his feelings hurt because he ran outside and as I chased him and uyelled at him he ignored me and just gave me that f you look over his shoulder as he trotted off. Well I chased him with the golf cart all over the 20 acre yard and then he crossed th highway and I really freaked and got the car and told the family who got 3 other cars and we mindlessly drove around screaming at the top of our lungs "BAAAAAACHUUUUSSSSS!!!" for about 3 hours until I finally came back through my front driveway from highway home and right as I got in the back door I heard the phone ringing and it was my brother saying Bacchus had been hit right in front of my house and he was laying in the street. I told him it was impossible that I just came down the driveway but he said his friend was out there right now and looking at him. I almost died and like the hugecoward I am I ran outside and as my wife drove up the driveway I screamed for her to turn around and drive out because I was looking at the lights of about 5-6 cars all stopped in front of my driveway, which was empty about 1 minute before as I drove in. Bacchus either heard me or saw my car and was following me home and some 16 or so young girl with a hot foot nailed him as he was coming across the street into my driveway. anyway my wife spun her car around and drove to the front as I stood there afraid to look and praying. She came immediatly back screaming get a blanket and I nearly broke a land speed record running to the street where he was lying in the middle of hit looking very near to death, knocked out but still breathing. I tried lifting 200+ lbs of limp bloody dog/friend into the front seat of the truck my wife had now pulled up in but it was next to impossible until some kind woman from a stopped car helped me along with her 7 year old. The next 12 hours were spent rushing from various hospitals for animals and even humans until I finally found the "dog emergency room where we then spent about 20 hours on pinas andneedles until he finally looked up and raised his head and we knew he was going to be ok. He ok but his left front leg was paraylyzed. I took him all over for the last 6 months but no luck. I resigned myself that my magnificent, beautiful friend who always loved my family was at least at home and we loved him (not as much as he loved our 2 year old , Aspen, who he gaurds jealously when anyone trys to come near by passively getting between her and them and just leaning on them) When I got home from St Clair he comes hopping up and I notice (with horror)he has been chewing on his own leg and immediatly brought him to the vet, then another, then call LSU who cant see him for a week then after a week of frustration mixed with sheer terror I realize ,at my familys suggestion, that the leg must come off. Well we bought him a female and she just went into heat day before yesterday and if you think it bothered him about his leg , BS! He was ready for the first love of his life and even maybe thats why he has been chewing leg to get that useless sob out of the way so he can get down to biz. I looked at it Tuesday morning and the leg was getting worse so I brought him to the vet who told me he could perform surgery and Bacchus could get home for wed afternoon and he could as Marvin Gay says "get it on". I made myself do this because I thought it was making him miserable and the trepedition of amputation bothered me most in my own hubris vanity for my once (and still) magnificent friend. We leave him at vet who at 10;30 says he is doing fine after surgery and then 18 hours ago my oldest son comes up to me and tells me "Dad, Bacchus died" It does not compute for over a minute and then I just drive off in circles crying for a couple of hours. WTF they never said this could happen. I am heartbroken, cannot sleep or eat. Goodbye my beautiful friend. I will always love you. I brought him home and buried him outside my bedroom door where he is now sleeping ,next to me, forever. To understand, you have to be brave enough to let them into your heart. Obviously Stan is a very brave man. Sorry he left too soon.
